Public Health and Environmental Studies: Assistant Professor in Environmental Public Health -- JR10014719

POSITION

A tenure-track faculty position at the rank of assistant professor is available in the Department of Public Health and Environmental Studies in the College of Arts and Sciences. The department seeks a candidate with expertise in environmental health committed to teaching excellence and maintaining an active research and service program. This campus-based appointment carries an initial two-year probationary appointment beginning with the 2027/2028 academic year. The starting salary for this position is $75,000.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Earned doctorate in environmental health, public health, or related discipline. ABD applicants may be considered but must complete the terminal degree by August 1, 2027.
• Demonstrated potential to teach undergraduate environmental public health courses in both campus-based and online settings.
• Demonstrated potential for scholarship and professional service.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Record of professional experience in environmental health.
• Possession of CIH, CSP, RS/REHS or similar certification.
• Experience teaching and/or mentoring a broad range of students using high-impact practices, including laboratory and field work.
• Experience developing campus-based and online courses.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Experience mentoring and/or advising students in their academic and career development.
• Demonstrated commitment to values of accessibility and belonging.
• Ability to contribute to the department's other programs is considered an asset.

DUTIES

• Develop and teach a variety of undergraduate environmental public health courses. Example courses include Introduction to Environmental Health, Occupational Health and Safety, Hazardous and Solid Waste, Toxicology and Risk Assessment, and Industrial Hygiene.
• Establish a program of scholarship that includes student collaborators.
• Engage in campus and community service such as extramural activities, departmental operations, and shared governance.
• Promote student development and academic achievement through advising, mentoring, service projects and internships.
• Collaborate with faculty, students, and community partners from a wide range of cultural, academic, and professional backgrounds.
• Actively participate in relevant environmental health organizations.

DEPARTMENT

The Department of Public Health and Environmental Studies has seven full-time faculty and is home to two undergraduate majors (Environmental Public Health and Public Health), the Master of Public Health, and two minors (Environmental Studies and Public Health) and three certificates (undergraduate certificate in Sustainability and Climate Action, graduate certificate in Public Health, graduate certificate in Environmental Health). Since 1971, the nationally accredited Environmental Public Health comprehensive major has prepared students for a wide variety of environmental health careers, including environmental health specialist, epidemiologist, public health officer, toxicologist, environmental health and safety officer, industrial hygienist, and environmental compliance officer in the public and private sectors.
