Position Description To participate in the work of responsibly providing classroom and laboratory instructional services to students taking continuing education EMS courses.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED: Receives general supervision from Director, Con Ed - Public Safety & EMS Coordinator Exercises no supervision

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions) Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

Essential Functions: Instruction will include initial and continuing education traditional classroom courses in Emergency Medical Services (EMS), including, but not limited to Medical Responder, EMT-Basic, EMT-Intermediate and EMT-Paramedic. Specific teaching assignments will vary from semester to semester and are negotiated within the division

Assist with recruiting, advising and retaining students

Assisting in the evaluation of courses and programs

Assist with maintaining contacts with public safety organizations for the purpose of keeping instructional programs current with advances in the occupational or academic field

Supervise the use of and operate various instructional equipment and tools; provide instructional demonstrations on mechanical machinery or other equipment as appropriate; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate

Prepare lesson plans and supplemental teaching materials and schedule classroom activities.as appropriate

Communicate with other program faculty regarding ongoing implementation and evaluation of assigned instructional programs

Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade, record, and maintain individual scores

Ensure that curriculum contributes to the development of skills, knowledge and abilities which prepare students for selected vocations

Maintain accurate records of student attendance, performance and other records that will satisfactorily meet the program needs or accreditation requirements

Stay abreast of new developments and changes in various assigned academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars and other continuing education programs as appropriate

Participate in the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area

Review available instructional materials; maintain laboratory equipment and supply inventory levels; test and make minor repairs on equipment; estimate time, materials, and equipment required for various assignments; submit requests for materials, supplies and equipment to upper level instructional staff as a part of the annual budget process; may also submit requisitions for facilities needs based on space evaluation

Other Important Functions: Ensure the adherence to safe and appropriate work practices and procedures

Respond to student or public inquiries in a courteous manner; provide information within the area of assignment; resolve complaints in an efficient and timely manner

Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various textbooks and select books to be used for future classes

Travel with students to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate

Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substances such as bloodborne pathogens; continually undergo training and train students in such procedures

Perform other related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of: Operations, services and activities of a comprehensive and modern academic program Methods and techniques of classroom and laboratory instruction related to the area of work assigned Operational characteristics of instructional equipment and tools used in the classroom or laboratory Principles and procedures of academic and instructional program development and administration Current trends, research findings and developments in the area of assignment

Supplemental Information

Minimum Education/Training: High School Diploma or Equivalent Current North Carolina Office of EMS (NCOEMS) credential at the level of the course(s) being taught

Minimum Experience: One (1) year of work experience at the level of the course(s) being taught

Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills: Completion of an approved EMS Instructor Methodology course AHA BLS instructor North Carolina Office of EMS (NCOEMS) instructor credential or ability to obtain within one year

Candidates who have obtained their education outside of the US and its territories must have their academic degree(s) validated, at their own expense, by an outside credential evaluation service as equivalent to the Baccalaureate or Masters degree conferred by a regionally accredited college or university in the United States.
