ABOUT THE POSITION

Long Beach City College is seeking qualified part-time faculty to teach in the discipline of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The AI curriculum supports the Colleges Associate in Science degree in AI for Digital Transformation and its stackable certificate pathways, a Career Technical Education program designed to prepare learners from all backgrounds for an AI-enabled workforce.

The program is intentionally no-code/low-code first and ethics-forward. Coursework emphasizes the applied, workplace-relevant use of artificial intelligence rather than software engineering and is designed to be accessible to students without a computer science background. Instructional areas within the discipline include foundational artificial intelligence and machine learning concepts; generative AI and prompt engineering; conversational and agentic AI systems; multi-modal AI applications spanning text, image, audio, and video; human + AI collaboration and workflow automation; and applied, project-based capstone instruction. Ethical practice, bias, fairness, privacy, transparency, accessibility, and human oversight are embedded throughout the curriculum rather than treated as a separate topic.

Faculty in this area may be assigned to teach courses that serve both career technical education and transfer pathways, preparing students for the evolving demands of the workplace and for industry-recognized credentials. Instruction may be delivered in in-person, hybrid, or online modalities, and teaching assignments may vary by campus location and scheduling needs. The ideal candidate demonstrates a strong commitment to equity-minded pedagogy, inclusive instructional practices, and student-centered learning within a highly diverse community college setting.

The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts Campus, the Trade Technical Campus, or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online, or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Part-time faculty positions are as-needed positions and do not accrue rights to tenure. Part-time faculty positions offer flexible hours and the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. Duties

The College seeks candidates who exhibit an understanding and commitment to the community college mission, and who have a passion for commitment to student success. The position encompasses the following professional responsibilities and competencies:

• Provide instruction in assigned Artificial Intelligence courses in accordance with the approved Course Outline of Record, established course objectives, and student learning outcomes.
• Design and deliver applied, project-based instruction using no-code and low-code AI platforms, including generative AI assistants, agent builders, workflow automation tools, and multi-modal AI environments.
• Embed ethical AI practice, bias, fairness, privacy, transparency, accessibility, and human oversight across course content and assessment.
• Develop and maintain course materials, assignments, and assessments in the Canvas learning management system, meeting ADA and WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards.
• Apply Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles and equity-minded, culturally responsive teaching practices.
• Evaluate student work, maintain accurate records, and submit grades and required reports by established deadlines.
• Hold office hours and provide timely academic support and feedback to students.
• Participate in student learning outcomes assessment, program review, and curriculum improvement as requested.
• Maintain currency in a rapidly evolving field, including emerging AI tools, platforms, and governance frameworks.
• Work collegially and collaboratively within the college community; collaborate across disciplines and utilize student support resources.
• Demonstrate commitment to serving the needs of the student, department, College, and community.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet ONE of the following:

1. A masters degree in artificial intelligence or machine learning, computer science, electrical engineering and computer science, data science, or cognitive science;

OR

2. The Equivalent

Qualifications that are different from, but equivalent to, those listed above, as determined through the districts local equivalency process. Long Beach City College has adopted an approved local Equivalency Statement for the Artificial Intelligence discipline, reproduced below. Applicants who do not meet the statewide minimum qualifications verbatim are required to submit a Supplemental Equivalency Application with their application materials.

Applicants who meet the statewide minimum qualifications verbatim do NOT need to submit an equivalency application. The local equivalency pathways expand, and do not replace or diminish, the statewide standard.

AND, Required of All Applicants

Evidence of a sensitivity to, understanding of, and ability to effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds.

LOCAL EQUIVALENCY, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

A candidate shall be deemed equivalent to the masters degree requirement in Artificial Intelligence if ONE of the following criteria is met:

Pathway I, Graduate-Level Academic Preparation in AI or Computational Disciplines

A masters degree in a related discipline such as: Business Analytics; Computer and Information Systems Security; Engineering; Instructional Design and Technology; Management Information Systems; Management Science; Mathematics; Psychology; or Statistics;

AND evidence of a minimum of 30 hours of professionally recognized training directly related to AI research, AI education and pedagogy, AI implementation, machine learning, data science, computational systems, or closely related technical subjects, with a focus on AI implementation and software systems training and professional development. Qualifying professional training may include, but is not limited to machine learning, neural networks, data modeling, algorithmic systems, artificial intelligence applications, statistical inference, computational theory, information systems architecture, cybersecurity systems, and advanced analytics.

Pathway II, Advanced Applied AI Systems Development and Implementation

A bachelors degree in computer science, information systems, cybersecurity, mathematics, engineering, or a related computational discipline, AND a minimum of five years of professional experience involving the design, implementation, deployment, or evaluation of artificial intelligence systems, data-driven systems, or computational automation at an advanced level. Such experience must demonstrate:

• Design and implementation of AI-driven instructional or enterprise systems;
• Development of AI curriculum aligned with workforce and academic standards;
• Integration of generative AI tools, large language models, API-based automation, or intelligent systems into production environments;
• Demonstrated applied understanding of machine learning, data systems, algorithmic modeling, or intelligent automation.

Pathway III, Demonstrated Advanced Academic and Professional Mastery in AI

A candidate may be deemed equivalent to the masters degree requirement if they demonstrate advanced, graduate-level breadth and depth of knowledge in AI theory, systems, and applications through a combination of the following:

• Development or substantial revision of credit-bearing coursework in artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, or intelligent systems;
• Leadership in the design, implementation, or evaluation of academic programs, certificates, or curricula related to artificial intelligence or computational technologies;
• Significant professional experience integrating AI systems, machine learning models, data-driven decision systems, or generative AI technologies into instructional, enterprise, or applied environments;
• Delivery of structured professional development, training, or scholarly presentations on artificial intelligence theory, applications, or governance;
• Completion of advanced study, formal coursework, or recognized certification in artificial intelligence or machine learning;
• Research, scholarship, or applied inquiry demonstrating systematic investigation of AI systems, adoption frameworks, algorithmic impact, or ethical considerations.

The candidate must demonstrate knowledge equivalent to graduate-level preparation in core areas such as machine learning principles; data systems and model evaluation; algorithmic reasoning; AI ethics and governance; and applied system integration.

Pathway IV, Prior CCC Equivalency Recognition

A candidate who has been granted a masters degree in equivalence in Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or a closely related discipline at another California Community College district, subject to review by the LBCC Equivalency Committee.

Academic Part-time employees receive commensurate sick leave per contract.
