Department University Police - 430500 Primary Purpose of Position
The Appalachian State University Police Department promotes a safe and secure environment for learning, living, and working through a community-oriented policing philosophy. The department advances public safety by fostering partnerships, preventing and investigating crime, providing education and awareness programs, conducting proactive patrols, and maintaining a highly trained workforce. The department delivers comprehensive law enforcement and emergency response services and enforces state laws and university policies on a 24-hour basis.
Property Security Officers support the department's public safety mission by providing professional security services and patrol coverage across university properties. Through proactive monitoring, reporting safety and security concerns, and documenting violations of university policies, Property Security Officers help protect university assets, enhance campus safety, and serve as a visible security presence for the university community.
Minimum Qualifications
High School diploma or equivalency and demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
License/Certification Required
Position requires a valid N.C. driver's license

Required Functional Competencies to Successfully Perform Job Duties.
Security, Patrol, and Enforcement: Lock and unlock buildings following assigned schedules. Review the Event Tracker for specific building openings at the beginning of each shift. Patrol campus buildings and parking lots and report security violations. Provide money escorts when requested. Provide non-emergency medical transports when required. Do walking patrols in the interior of campus. Respond to routine Blue Light activations when dispatched. Conduct monthly Blue Light maintenance checks and submit report to supervisor. Complete weekly lights-out checks and submit to supervisor.
Communication: Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; by talking clearly on a mobile and handheld radio and by completing written reports. Respond to calls for service from community members on a regular basis and provide verbal responses to their requests. Explain policies to university community members and visitors when required. Demonstrate the ability to relate and interact with members of the department, university and community groups as required.
Technical Knowledge: Demonstrate the ability to proerly use all assigned equipment. Be able to read and send messages using the university e-mail system. Understand the difference between violations of law and university policy violations and report each to the appropriate supervisor. Attend mandatory in-service training classes when required. Review university and department policies on a regular basis.

Driving a state vehicle in all types of weather. Walking in buildings, around campus, up and down hills and stairs, checking buildings and doors.
