Job Description
The Mission Critical Project Manager oversees the full lifecycle of large, complex mission critical construction projects, from preconstruction through final turnover. This role leads planning, coordination, and financial performance while ensuring safety, quality, schedule, and cost objectives are consistently met. You will work in a fast-paced environment where reliability, redundancy, and operational continuity are essential, collaborating closely with architecture, structure, MEP, and specialty trades. This position offers the opportunity to build high-profile facilities, develop strong client relationships, and grow your career with a team that values people, innovation, and technical excellence.
Responsibilities
- Maintain full ownership of project scope, schedule, budget, and risk management for mission critical facilities.
- Lead the project team through all phases of construction, including preconstruction, procurement, construction, commissioning, and closeout.
- Establish clear expectations, accountability, and communication across all project stakeholders, both internal and external.
- Champion a strong safety culture across all scopes of work, ensuring compliance with safety standards, procedures, and best practices.
- Lead quality planning and execution to support zero-defect delivery and meet mission critical performance requirements.
- Conduct and support safety and quality audits, inspections, and corrective actions to drive continuous improvement.
- Manage complex coordination between civil, structural, architectural, and MEP scopes with a focus on system integration and performance.
- Oversee project phasing, sequencing, and risk mitigation in schedule-driven, high-reliability environments.
- Support and oversee testing, commissioning, and turnover activities to ensure systems meet performance, redundancy, and owner expectations.
- Participate in estimating, quantity takeoffs, subcontractor bidding, and contract award strategies.
- Maintain accurate project financials, including forecasts, cost controls, and reporting.
- Initiate, review, and negotiate change orders with an emphasis on value, risk reduction, and fair outcomes.
- Lead procurement and performance management of subcontractors and suppliers to ensure quality, schedule, and cost objectives are met.
- Facilitate collaboration between owners, designers, consultants, and commissioning agents to resolve issues and maintain alignment.
- Conduct owner-architect-contractor (OAC) meetings, subcontractor coordination meetings, and internal team meetings.
- Lead, mentor, and support Project Engineers, Assistant Project Managers, and Superintendents, providing ongoing coaching, feedback, and career development.
- Support business development efforts and contribute to building and maintaining repeat client relationships.
- Remain available as needed in a demanding, fast-paced environment where issues may arise outside of standard working hours.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support successful project delivery and team performance.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or a related field.
- 5+ years of experience managing large, complex commercial or mission critical construction projects.
- Proven ability to manage integrated project teams across all building systems, including civil, structural, architectural, and MEP.
- Strong understanding of construction sequencing, risk management, and system coordination.
- Experience as a Project Manager on data center, mission critical, or high-tech projects.
- Proficiency with Procore for construction management and project documentation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools for communication, analysis, and reporting.
- Proficiency with Primavera P6 for project scheduling and critical path management.
- Experience using construction financial tools to manage budgets, forecasts, and cost controls.
- Demonstrated experience managing RFIs, design coordination, and project engineering processes.
- Proven ability to manage change orders, including initiation, review, negotiation, and documentation.
- Excellent leadership skills with the ability to set direction, drive accountability, and motivate teams.
- Strong communication skills for effective collaboration in a team setting with owners, designers, subcontractors, and internal staff.
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills in a fast-paced, schedule-driven environment.
- High level of punctuality, reliability, and personal accountability.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Experience with mission critical or high-reliability environments such as data centers and critical facilities.
- Experience in commercial construction with exposure to complex, large-scale projects.
- Experience in project coordination and project engineering roles prior to or in addition to project management.
- Ability to build and maintain strong client relationships and support business development efforts.
- Comfort working with multidisciplinary teams and multiple stakeholders with competing priorities.
- Ability to work with a high degree of autonomy on decisions that impact company results, client relationships, and subcontractor performance.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and stakeholders.
- Commitment to safety, quality, and continuous improvement in construction practices.
Work Environment
The Project Manager primarily works indoors in a main office or a field office located at the construction site, with periodic work outdoors in various weather conditions. You may be exposed to typical construction-related health and safety hazards, with noise levels ranging from moderate to loud. The role requires light physical effort, including handling objects up to 20 pounds and periods of standing, walking, sitting, talking, and hearing while moving between office and field environments. The work environment is demanding and fast paced, and the number of hours worked per week may often exceed 40, with the need to be available or "on call" as project needs arise. Construction site locations may change over time, and the position may require travel, including potential nationwide travel depending on project assignments. You will work closely with project teams in an office in Scottsdale and at a project site in Mesa, collaborating with field and office personnel. The position requires a high level of autonomy in day-to-day decision-making that affects project outcomes, client satisfaction, and subcontractor relationships, within a culture that values teamwork, accountability, and building strong community and project partnerships.
