The Position

The City of Oakland is an equal opportunity employer that values workforce diversity, inclusion, and equity. Oakland has a long history of activism around issues of justice and equity. Both oppression and this resistance to oppression have shaped the city's historical roots and the lives of its residents to this day. As public servants in one of the most diverse cities in the nation, we strive to develop employees who understand the harm and impacts of systemic inequity to create lasting, meaningful outcomes for everyone. Oakland strives to establish an environment that embraces the richness of culture, community, and individualism of employees.

Why join the City of Oaklands CeaseFire Unit?

The City of Oakland is seeking an experienced, collaborative, and community-centered leader to serve as its Ceasefire Director-an opportunity to lead one of the City's most important and successful strategies for reducing gun violence, saving lives, and building safer communities.

The Ceasefire Director will be at the center of a powerful partnership committed to preventing violence and creating pathways to safety, healing, and opportunity. Serving as the primary liaison among the Mayor's Office, the Oakland Police Department, the Department of Violence Prevention, community-based organizations, service providers, faith leaders, survivors, victims' families, and criminal justice partners, the Director will bring diverse stakeholders together around a shared mission.

This role offers the opportunity to coordinate Oakland's overall Ceasefire strategy, strengthen collaboration across agencies and communities, and ensure that every partner remains aligned, informed, and focused on achieving measurable results.

We are looking for someone who is:

  • A strong leader. You inspire confidence, provide clear direction, hold others accountable, and lead with integrity, vision, and purpose.
  • Discerning and decisive. You carefully assess situations, consider the facts, and confidently make thoughtful, timely decisions.
  • Deeply committed to advancing public safety. You understand and are committed to achieving the three pillars of the CeaseFire program: reducing gun violence and saving lives, reducing recidivism, and building trust between the community and the Oakland Police Department.
  • A team builder. You embrace collaboration and possess a solution-focused attitude, support others, and work collectively to achieve shared goals.
  • Analytical and data-driven. You effectively interpret, evaluate, and analyze data, and use that information to inform sound decisions and strategic actions.
  • An effective communicator. You will monitor performance data and prepare reports, briefings, recommendations, and updates for City leadership, CeaseFire partners, and the public.

What you will typically be responsible for:

  • Coordinating the City of Oakland's Ceasefire gun violence reduction strategy and ensuring consistent implementation across all partners.
  • Serving as the central liaison among the Mayor's Office, City departments, law enforcement agencies, service providers, and community partners.
  • Working with intelligence and violence-prevention partners to identify individuals and groups at the highest risk of gun violence.
  • Planning and leading custom notifications, call-ins, and other direct communications that deliver a clear and respectful message of accountability, concern, and opportunity.
  • Recruiting, training, and preparing community leaders, clergy, survivors, service providers, and agency representatives who participate in direct communications.
  • Convening partners, facilitating strategy meetings, addressing implementation barriers, and maintaining trusted relationships with communities most affected by gun violence.
  • Monitoring performance data and preparing reports, briefings, recommendations, and updates for City leadership, Ceasefire partners, and the public, as needed.
  • Tracking data such as referrals, follow-up, and outcomes

Supplemental Information

The Recruitment Process:

The City of Oakland works with a Civil Service system. Applicants apply online, and HR staff reviews their experience, education, and training listed on the application against the "minimum qualifications" listed for each position.

Candidates who demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualification requirements are then invited to participate in an assessment process (or testing) to measure their knowledge, skills, and abilities in job-related areas.

Candidates who do not demonstrate that they meet the minimum qualification requirements will have an opportunity to request a final review. Candidates must request a final review within 5 business days of being notified that they did not meet the minimum qualifications.

In the final review, candidates may clarify information already provided on their application. No additional work history, education, or certifications will be accepted. Any decisions made during this review process will be final.

For this recruitment, all qualified applicants will be sent a writing exercise (weighted 100%), which will then be evaluated and rated by subject matter experts. You will have 7 days from the time you receive the exam link to complete and submit your written responses. Tentatively, the writing exercise will be sent during the week of September 21, 2026.

Candidates requesting reasonable accommodations for the examination process must request accommodations no later than one week before they are scheduled to take the exam; otherwise, it may not be possible to arrange accommodations for the selection process.
