Job Title: Project Manager / Estimator - Commercial Electrical

Job Description

This role supports the Commercial Department and may also assist the Commercial Service Department as needed. The Project Manager / Estimator prepares competitive commercial electrical estimates and manages awarded projects from start to finish. The position focuses on delivering safe, on-schedule, and on-budget projects while building strong, long-term relationships with clients, vendors, and field teams. Success in this role requires strong commercial electrical estimating experience, solid project management capabilities, and a proactive understanding of the commercial electrical market, particularly in the Kansas City area.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare competitive, accurate estimates for commercial electrical projects, ensuring alignment with project scope and client expectations.
  • Review construction plans, specifications, and bid documents to fully understand project requirements and constraints.
  • Identify project risks, cost-saving opportunities, and value engineering options to improve project feasibility and profitability.
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with general contractors, owners, and business partners to support ongoing and future work.
  • Help generate repeat business by delivering exceptional service, responsiveness, and reliable communication throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Manage commercial electrical projects from award through closeout, ensuring all contractual and technical requirements are met.
  • Coordinate manpower, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and scheduling to keep projects on track and properly resourced.
  • Monitor project budgets, labor productivity, purchasing, and overall profitability, taking corrective action when needed.
  • Manage change orders, RFIs, submittals, and all related project documentation in a timely and organized manner.
  • Identify and resolve potential issues before they affect project schedules, budgets, or customer satisfaction.
  • Collaborate closely with field supervisors and electricians to ensure work is executed safely, efficiently, and according to plans and codes.
  • Support field crews by providing clear direction, timely information, and the tools and resources they need to succeed.
  • Partner with purchasing, warehouse, accounting, and leadership teams to maintain smooth project workflows and timely deliveries.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement within project and field teams.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for customers, general contractors, and other project stakeholders throughout the project.
  • Communicate proactively with all stakeholders, providing updates, clarifications, and solutions as issues arise.
  • Deliver solutions-focused outcomes, minimizing surprises and ensuring that project challenges are addressed quickly and effectively.
  • Consistently deliver projects that earn repeat business and build long-term client relationships.

Essential Skills

  • Experience estimating and/or managing commercial electrical construction projects.
  • Strong understanding of commercial electrical systems, construction methods, and National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements.
  • Ability to confidently read and interpret construction drawings, blueprints, and specifications.
  • Proven capability to communicate effectively with customers, general contractors, field teams, and internal departments.
  • Ability to successfully manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to keep estimates, schedules, and documentation accurate and current.
  • Financial awareness and the ability to monitor budgets, labor productivity, and project profitability.
  • Proficiency with estimating and project management software tools.
  • Knowledge of electrical construction practices and standards.
  • Ability to interpret and apply electrical codes and regulations.
  • Experience with bidding processes for commercial electrical projects.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with general contractors and commercial construction teams.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Master Electrician license (preferred).
  • Commercial electrical estimating experience beyond basic exposure (preferred).
  • Previous project management or service coordination experience in commercial electrical construction (preferred).
  • Experience working closely with general contractors and commercial construction teams on complex projects.
  • Familiarity with low-voltage systems and related electrical components.
  • Journeyman electrician license or equivalent field experience.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships with clients, vendors, and field personnel.
  • Customer-focused mindset with a commitment to delivering high-quality work and service.

Work Environment

The role operates within a commercial electrical construction environment, combining office-based estimating and project management work with regular interaction with field teams and active job sites. You will use estimating and project management software, review electronic and printed construction documents, and coordinate with purchasing, warehouse, and accounting functions to keep projects moving efficiently. The position involves collaboration with field supervisors, electricians, and general contractors in a fast-paced setting that requires frequent communication and coordination. Site visits may require appropriate field attire and adherence to standard safety practices and personal protective equipment requirements typically found on commercial construction projects.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $80000.00 - $90000.00/yr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
