    The Project Engineer I at Horwitz supports project managers, field teams, and trade partners through strong communication, organization, and teamwork while demonstrating our core values: Safe, Accountable, Professional, Motivated, Can Do, and Curious. This position assists with project documentation, cost tracking, scheduling, planning, and technical support while developing a foundational understanding of construction methods, materials, systems, and codes. By coordinating with stakeholders, managing project requirements, and supporting a culture of safety and continuous improvement, the Project Engineer I helps deliver projects efficiently and to Horwitz standards.

    Documentation & Contract Management

    Manage equipment submittals as needed. Review the Horwitz Way "Contract Review" document. Understand the layout of project folders in Box and manage project documentation. Complete receipt inspections for project equipment deliveries. Apply for city or DOLI permits with assistance from Project Managers. Gather project closeout documents with Project Manager assistance.

    Cost Management

    Send equipment and material pricing requests using schedules, specifications, and material lists provided by Design or Service Project Managers. Understand the concepts and processes associated with project change orders and proposals. Begin developing an understanding of forecasting for Service/IS projects. Become familiar with estimating tools. Understand commodity material buyout pricing, including hardware, pipe, fittings, hangers, ductwork, and related materials. Develop an understanding of field labor roles, including Foremen, Journeymen, and Apprentices, as well as applicable labor rates.

    Technical Skills

    Become familiar with the different materials used in Service projects. Develop an understanding of ductwork, hydronic, and plumbing construction methods. Develop an understanding of HVAC, hydronic, and plumbing system operation and design. Develop an understanding of electrical requirements relevant to mechanical construction. Develop an understanding of temperature controls requirements relevant to mechanical construction. Develop an understanding of mechanical and plumbing code requirements and applicable standards, including ASHRAE and IECC. Understand the prefabrication process. Understand the roles and scopes of work of Horwitz subcontractors. Complete receipt inspections for project equipment deliveries.

    Communication

    Attend meetings with customers, owners, and general contractors. Follow guidance from Project Managers and field teams while demonstrating a strong motivation to learn, assume additional responsibilities, and advance professionally. Learn how Project Managers develop and maintain relationships with customers, trade partners, and general contractors. Attend internal meetings, including weekly foreman meetings, prefab meetings, constraint meetings, lessons learned, WIP meetings, and project handoffs. Understand the concepts and processes associated with different billing types, including GMP, simple, T&M, and lump sum.

    Project Planning

    Understand project schedules. Learn the fundamentals of Horwitzs labor force and labor requirements based on project scope and timeline.

    Perform other duties as assigned.

    Education and Experience:

    Bachelor's degree in construction management, Mechanical Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and experience considered.

    Internship or prior experience in construction, engineering, or project coordination preferred but not required.

    Knowledge of mechanical systems (HVAC, plumbing, hydronic) or construction processes is a plus.

    Willingness to learn industry codes, safety standards, and project management practices.
