Project Controls Manager

Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Project Controls Manager for a contract-to-hire opportunity in Kansas City, MO. This leadership role is responsible for directing the project controls function across multiple complex engineering and construction projects while ensuring the successful execution of scheduling, cost control, estimating, forecasting, earned value management, document control, and reporting processes.
The Project Controls Manager will lead a team of Project Controls professionals, establish best practices, support project leadership, and ensure project controls systems, processes, and reporting align with enterprise standards. This position plays a vital role in delivering accurate project performance reporting, mitigating project risk, and driving successful project execution.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, manage, mentor, and develop the Project Controls department.
- Establish and maintain project controls standards, processes, and reporting systems.
- Support Project Managers and Project Directors across multiple large and complex projects.
- Develop and oversee project execution plans and project controls strategies.
- Lead the preparation of:
- Project schedules
- Cost reports
- Forecasts
- Cash flow reports
- Executive reporting dashboards
- Develop, implement, and manage project controls reporting databases and data warehouse solutions.
- Direct engineering, procurement, construction planning, scheduling, logistics, and cost control activities.
- Validate project cost management, forecasting, and contingency reporting.
- Interface with project management and accounting teams to review project financial performance.
- Support internal and external project audits.
- Lead Interactive Project Planning Meetings (IPPM).
- Present project controls updates to executive leadership and project stakeholders.
- Direct schedule development utilizing Critical Path Method (CPM) scheduling techniques.
- Recommend schedule recovery plans, mitigation strategies, and workarounds.
- Validate Earned Value Management (EVM) reporting and project performance metrics.
- Analyze progress curves, cash flow projections, and project performance trends.
- Lead project change management activities, including review of prime contract and subcontract change orders.
- Review material takeoffs and support project estimating activities.
- Oversee project risk identification, mitigation planning, and monitoring.
- Validate quality assurance reviews and field audits related to project controls.
- Perform project forensic analysis when required.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, contractors, and project stakeholders.
- Support business development initiatives and identify opportunities for future work.
- Recruit, train, mentor, and evaluate project controls staff.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
- Relevant industry experience may be substituted for degree requirements.
- Minimum of 7 years of direct Project Controls experience supporting engineering or construction projects.
- Prior leadership or supervisory experience managing project controls teams.
- Strong knowledge of:
- Critical Path Method (CPM) Scheduling
- Project Cost Management
- Estimating
- Forecasting
- Document Control
- Experience supporting engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) projects.
- Experience with construction self-perform projects.
- Experience reviewing and negotiating construction contracts, prime agreements, and subcontract change orders.
- Strong understanding of project financial reporting and cost forecasting.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
- High attention to detail and accuracy.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
- Extensive accounting and project financial management knowledge.
- Experience with Oracle Primavera P6.
- Experience with Earned Value Management (EVM) systems.
- Experience developing integrated engineering, procurement, and construction schedules.
- Experience managing project controls across multiple large-scale industrial or infrastructure projects
