The Project Accountant is responsible for managing the financial aspects of construction projects from project setup through closeout. This role works closely with project managers, operations teams, subcontractors, and clients to ensure accurate job costing, billing, reporting, and financial compliance. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of construction accounting principles, including contract billing, retainage, work-in-progress (WIP) reporting, and project cost analysis.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set up and maintain projects within the accounting and ERP systems.

  • Monitor project budgets, costs, and financial performance throughout the project lifecycle.

  • Track and analyze labor, materials, equipment, subcontractor, and overhead costs.

  • Review project transactions to ensure accurate coding and allocation of expenses.

  • Maintain detailed project records and supporting documentation.

  • Prepare and process progress billings, time and material billings, and lump-sum contract billings.

  • Manage retainage receivable and payable balances.

  • Review contracts and change orders to ensure proper billing and revenue recognition.

  • Work closely with project managers to ensure billings are submitted accurately and on time.

  • Perform job cost analysis and identify cost overruns or budget variances.

  • Prepare and maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules.

  • Analyze project profitability and provide financial insights to project teams.

  • Review subcontractor invoices for accuracy and contract compliance.

  • Process subcontractor payments and monitor lien waivers.

  • Track subcontract commitments and change orders.

  • Ensure vendor and subcontractor documentation remains current.

  • Prepare journal entries and account reconciliations.

  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes.

  • Reconcile project-related accounts and investigate discrepancies.

  • Support financial statement preparation and audit requests.

  • Ensure compliance with company policies and GAAP.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.

  • 3+ years of accounting experience, preferably within the construction industry.

  • Strong understanding of job costing, project accounting, and construction contracts.

  • Experience with AIA billing, retainage, change orders, and WIP reporting.

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including pivot tables and advanced formulas.

  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Pay Details: $60,000.00 to $70,000.00 per year
