Beacon Breaks Ground on New Memorial Hospital Patient Tower
In October 2022, Beacon Health System leaders broke ground on the new 10-story patient care tower on the campus of Memorial Hospital of South Bend. This transformational, once-in-a-generation project is designed to enrich the patient, family and visitor experience while meeting the growing healthcare needs of residents in our area for decades to come.

Summary
Under the supervision of the Clinical Manager or designee, the Progressive Mobility Specialist is an Associate with specialized training who provides safe patient progressive mobility per hospital policy using approved assistive devices and procedures in the acute hospital setting and an advanced understanding of body mechanics for patient transfers and movement.

Performs designated routine tasks related to:
- Performing defined tasks to optimize for hospitalized patients on a global level such as patient movement, transfers and selection of appropriate mobility devices (lifts, gait belts, proper turning and additional assistive devices).
- Demonstrating use, selection and adaptation of patient transfer equipment/device use, patient mobility techniques, and body mechanics in a safe manner as directed by rehabilitation and/or nursing.
- Managing multiple priorities when necessary and communicating well with other members of the healthcare team in carrying out daily responsibilities pertaining to progressive mobility.
- Teaching and coaching staff on mobility techniques and enlisting nursing staff assistance if needed.
- Performing documentation and/or data collection on essential functions as it relates to monitoring quality measures.
- Performing duties which may include patient care as needed and time allows during performance of mobility duties i.e. assisting patients in the bathroom, incontinence care, and setting up patients for meals.
Supports the Organization by:
- Maintaining a clean and organized working area.
- Maintaining an inventory of identified mobility supplies and equipment.
- Developing and maintaining good working relationships throughout the hospital.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
- Completing other job-related duties and projects assigned.
ORGANIZATIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Associates comply with the following organizational requirements:
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR), and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Comply with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent and one year of experience in a patient care setting. Will need to maintain current CPR certification. At least one year's experience in an inpatient care facility with direct patient care experience preferred.
Knowledge & Skills
- Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to consistently interact with patients, families, visitors, and staff in a courteous manner and to maintain positive working relationships.
- Demonstrates the ability to read at a level necessary to comprehend written procedures dealing with all aspects of the position.
- Requires basic office skills (i.e., filing, phone usage, computers and other keyboard equipment). Attention to detail and accuracy is required.
Working Conditions
- Works in a patient care environment require physical exertion, frequent changes in job demands, certain undesirable patient care activities and possible exposure to biohazards and blood-borne pathogens.
Physical Demands
- Requires physical ability and stamina (i.e. to walk/stand for prolonged periods of time, push carts/wheelchairs up to 50 pounds, to position/lift patients at a maximum of 35 pounds unassisted, over 35 pounds requires assistance, provide CPR, etc.) to perform the essential functions of the position.
