Pilot Plant Process Technician
Position Summary
The Pilot Plant Process Technician is responsible for supporting the operation, maintenance, construction, and troubleshooting of pilot plant systems used for research, development, and process testing. This individual will safely operate process equipment, monitor system performance, perform mechanical and electrical maintenance, and assist with pilot plant builds and modifications. While basic instrumentation maintenance is part of the role, the primary focus is operating and maintaining pilot plant processes and equipment.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Pilot Plant Operations
- Operate pilot plant equipment and process systems in support of research and development activities.
- Monitor process conditions, collect operating data, and document process performance.
- Perform routine inspections and troubleshoot equipment to ensure safe and reliable operation.
- Assist engineers and scientists with pilot plant startups, shutdowns, and process testing.
- Support 24/7 pilot plant operations as required.
Mechanical & Process Equipment
- Install, repair, and maintain pumps, motors, valves, piping, heat exchangers, reactors, and other process equipment.
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on pilot plant systems.
- Assist with fabrication, assembly, and modification of pilot plant equipment.
- Perform mechanical tasks including cutting, fitting, tubing, and pipe installation.
Electrical & Instrumentation Support
- Install, replace, and troubleshoot basic instrumentation including pressure transmitters, thermocouples, flow meters, level devices, and scales.
- Assist with wiring, electrical troubleshooting, and AC/DC powered equipment.
- Support control systems and assist with control software configuration as needed.
- Read and interpret P&IDs, wiring diagrams, and technical drawings.
Pilot Plant Construction
- Assist in constructing and modifying pilot plant systems.
- Install piping, tubing, instrumentation, electrical components, and support structures.
- Assist with commissioning new equipment and process systems.
Required Education, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Technical or vocational training is preferred.
Experience
- Experience operating pilot plants, chemical processing equipment, refinery operations, manufacturing, or other industrial process environments.
- Experience troubleshooting mechanical equipment such as pumps, motors, valves, and piping.
- Familiarity with industrial electrical systems and process instrumentation.
- Experience reading P&IDs, process flow diagrams, and technical drawings.
- Knowledge of chemical processes is preferred.
Skills
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
- Ability to safely operate industrial process equipment.
- Basic electrical troubleshooting abilities.
- Proficient with Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
Additional Requirements
- Must be able to work a 24/7 rotating schedule as business needs require.
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable Motor Vehicle Record (MVR).
- Steel-toed safety shoes required.
- Standard dress code includes a collared shirt and jeans.
- Typical schedule is Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM, with flexibility to support shift operations, startups, and plant testing activities.
