    About Onyx Specialty Processing

Onyx Specialty Processing is a specialty surface finishing company in Decatur, Texas, serving the aerospace and defense industries. Our capabilities include Anodize (Type I, II, and III), Chromate Conversion Coating (Chem Film Type I and II), Passivation, Paint, and related processes — performed to strict MIL-SPEC and AMS standards in a NADCAP-accredited environment. We are committed to precision, quality, and the growth of our people.

    Job Summary

As a Process Technician II, you will be a primary operator on our metal finishing lines, running anodize and related chemical processing operations on aerospace components. You will manage bath chemistry, monitor process parameters, perform in-process checks, and maintain complete process documentation — all in compliance with applicable aerospace specifications. This is a mid-level role requiring a minimum of 3 years of chemical processing experience. Significant growth opportunity exists within the company for the right candidate.

    Key Responsibilities

    Metal Finishing Operations

    • Set up, operate, and monitor anodize processing lines for Type I, II, and III anodize per customer specifications and applicable standards (MIL-A-8625, AMS 2469, etc.).
    • Load and rack aluminum parts for processing, ensuring proper electrical contact, correct masking of critical surfaces, and compliance with the process traveler.
    • Monitor and control rectifier settings (amperage, voltage, cycle time) and tank temperatures to achieve specified coating thickness and appearance.
    • Perform and document bath chemistry analysis including sulfuric acid concentration, aluminum content, and dissolved solids; make bath additions and adjustments as required.
    • Operate rinsing stations, etch tanks, desmut/deox tanks, and sealing systems in accordance with process requirements.
    • Support Chem Film (Type I and II) and Passivation operations in accordance with MIL-DTL-5541, AMS 2412, AMS 2700, and other applicable specifications.
    • Advice engineering and leadership teams on procedures and fixture designs.

    In-Process Quality Checks

    • Perform in-process inspections including visual checks for burn, pitting, streaking, bare spots, and other process anomalies.
    • Conduct in-process coating thickness measurements using eddy-current or other approved methods to verify process conformance before parts are released to Quality.
    • Identify and immediately communicate non-conformances or process deviations to the supervisor and Quality team.
    • Accurately complete job travelers, process logs, bath records, and in-process inspection records to ensure full traceability.

    Safety & Environmental Compliance

    • Follow all OSHA, EPA, and company protocols when handling hazardous chemicals including sulfuric acid, caustic solutions, chromate compounds, and process waste streams.
    • Use and maintain required PPE (chemical-resistant gloves, apron, face shield, respirator) at all times when working with chemicals.
    • Support proper chemical waste disposal and wastewater treatment operations in compliance with applicable regulations.
    • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment at all times.

    Collaboration & Continuous Improvement

    • Partner with the Quality team and Technician Supervisor to resolve process issues, reduce scrap, and meet customer delivery commitments.
    • Participate in training programs, process audits, and NADCAP-related activities as required.
    • Support cross-training of teammates and assist with other surface finishing operations as needed.
