    Description

Amazon Robotics is located in the greater Boston area, the epicenter of robotics innovation. Our diverse team of engineers come from all over the world to design, test, and build our dynamic fleet of robots and mechatronic systems. Having our offices, labs, test floors, and factories all co-located means that we can design the hardware, write the code, test, build, and watch it all come to life. This allows us to innovate quickly and on limitless ideas. Current advancements are underway in autonomous movement and mobility, artificial intelligence and machine learning, manipulation, simulation, robotic management software, predictive analytics, and much more.

The Amazon Robotics (AR) Robotics Manufacturing and Technical Operations (RMTO) organization manufactures high-quality robotics and gets the right materials to the right place at the right time to enable our automated solutions.

The Process Engineering Manager will independently lead a team of engineers responsible for developing, installing, validating, and optimizing complex manufacturing processes and systems with considerable impact across the Robotics manufacturing business. You will be accountable for the structure and strategic direction of your team, determining the right mix of engineers and where they need to be located to meet business needs. You will set the vision and tenets that guide how your team makes decisions, and your roadmap will influence broader organizational goals, including participation in Amazon's annual planning process.

You will partner with Supply Chain, Engineering, Facilities, and Operations teams, and regularly communicate with senior management on status, risks, and change control. You will prioritize high-impact projects, obtain approval from relevant functional leaders, schedule resources, and drive crisp decisions about which work is essential, which can be triaged, and which can be omitted. You will build a team that delivers successfully without you, coaching engineers to make smart trade-offs and take end-to-end ownership of the systems they build.

    Key job responsibilities

    • Actively support and foster a culture of inclusion.
    • Coach and mentor a team that owns process development and optimization for new products.
    • Set your team's vision, tenets, and roadmap; participate in Amazon's planning process.
    • Implement technology and tool improvements that impact Safety, Quality, and Cost targets.
    • Perform critical process reviews, including Risk and Hazard assessments.
    • Lead the development and validation of processes specific to NPI (New Product Introduction) programs.
    • Write business and operational planning documents for capital equipment and plant infrastructure.
    • Coordinate cross-functional development work across teams and all levels of the organization, delegating to TPMs or senior engineers as appropriate.
    • Define audit mechanisms and metrics that explain team performance and variance against goals.
    • Proactively identify and mitigate risks before they become roadblocks; escalate with sound judgment.
    • Be strategic about senior engineer growth, providing stretch opportunities that demonstrate higher-level scope, impact, and leadership.
    • Ability to travel (~10%) to support projects.

    A day in the life

You will balance hands-on technical judgment with team leadership, questioning proposals and assumptions when you are involved while empowering your engineers to own their systems end-to-end. You will drive mindful discussions that lead to clear decisions, structure projects to reduce exposure to classic failure modes (unclear requirements, ineffective collaboration, insufficient testing), and recommend reviews with Senior/Principal Engineers when solutions risk adding complexity or impairing future innovation. When views diverge, you will find the best path forward and build consensus around it.

    About Company

At Amazon, we don’t wait for the next big idea to present itself. We envision the shape of impossible things and then we boldly make them reality. So far, this mindset has helped us achieve some incredible things. Let’s build new systems, challenge the status quo, and design the world we want to live in. We believe the work you do here will be the best work of your life.

Wherever you are in your career exploration, Amazon likely has an opportunity for you. Our research scientists and engineers shape the future of natural language understanding with Alexa. Fulfillment center associates around the globe send customer orders from our warehouses to doorsteps. Product managers set feature requirements, strategy, and marketing messages for brand new customer experiences. And as we grow, we’ll add jobs that haven’t been invented yet.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
