Job Title: Process Documentation SpecialistJob Description

The Process Documentation Specialist supports a chemical manufacturing operation by developing, updating, and standardizing operating procedures, work instructions, and process documentation. This role focuses on capturing process knowledge from the manufacturing floor and converting it into clear, practical, and user-friendly procedures that promote safe, consistent, and efficient operations. The position works closely with operators, engineers, maintenance personnel, and site leadership to improve documentation accuracy, preserve critical knowledge, and enhance training and process consistency across the facility.

Responsibilities

  • Review, update, and create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), work instructions, and other controlled manufacturing documentation.
  • Conduct regular observations on the manufacturing floor to ensure written procedures accurately reflect current operating practices.
  • Work directly with operators, supervisors, engineers, and maintenance personnel to capture undocumented process knowledge and translate it into formal documentation.
  • Document process flows, operating parameters, troubleshooting steps, safety considerations, and best practices in a clear and structured format.
  • Create process maps, workflows, and training materials that support consistent execution of manufacturing processes.
  • Incorporate process safety information, personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements, and operational risk considerations into procedures and work instructions.
  • Support documentation updates related to process changes, equipment modifications, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Assist with Management of Change (MOC) and compliance documentation efforts to ensure alignment with internal standards and regulatory expectations.
  • Collaborate with site leadership to standardize documentation practices and improve document control across the facility.
  • Leverage both technical knowledge and communication skills to improve training materials and help drive consistency in how processes are executed.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum of 3+ years of experience in manufacturing, technical writing, process engineering, quality, or a related field.
  • Experience developing SOPs, work instructions, process documentation, or other controlled manufacturing documentation.
  • Experience working in a chemical manufacturing, coatings, adhesives, specialty chemicals, petroleum, or similar process manufacturing environment.
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to translate complex technical information into clear, user-friendly procedures.
  • Proven document control skills and familiarity with structured documentation practices.
  • Ability to work directly with production personnel and effectively gather information from subject matter experts through interviews and observations.
  • Understanding of manufacturing operations, chemical hazards, and industrial safety practices.
  • Experience with process mapping and workflow documentation.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including tools for document creation and formatting.
  • Comfort spending significant time on the manufacturing floor observing processes and engaging with operators.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Familiarity with OSHA Process Safety Management (PSM).
  • Experience supporting Management of Change (MOC) programs.
  • Experience with SAP or other ERP systems.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Continuous Improvement experience.
  • Knowledge of OSHA and ISO-related requirements in a manufacturing context.
  • Background in chemical manufacturing or similar process industries that supports both technical understanding and effective communication.

Work Environment

This role is based in a chemical manufacturing facility and involves a strong presence on the plant floor, observing live operations and collaborating closely with operators and technical staff. The standard schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with no overtime expected. You will work with standard office software such as Microsoft Office and may interact with systems like SAP or other ERP platforms and document control tools. The environment emphasizes process safety, awareness of chemical hazards, and adherence to industrial safety practices, including appropriate use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when on the manufacturing floor. This is a Permanent position based out of South Bend, IN.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.50 - $32.25/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
