Process Control Technician (PCT) - Southeast Region

Reports To: Maintenance Manager and Electrical Supervisor

Location: Heidelberg Materials-Southeast Region, Harleyville

Position Summary

The Process Control Technician (PCT) is responsible for installing, maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing process control systems and instrumentation across facilities within the HM Harleyville facility. This role ensures reliable plant operations by supporting automation systems, control loops, and field instrumentation to maintain product quality, safety, and operational efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

Process Control & Automation

  • Maintain and troubleshoot distributed control systems (DCS), PLCs, HMIs, and SCADA systems.
  • Monitor process control loops and tune controllers to optimize performance and stability.
  • Support system upgrades, configuration changes, and maintenance of control strategies.
  • Assist in implementing process improvements and automation solutions.

Instrumentation & Equipment Maintenance

  • Install, calibrate, and maintain field instruments such as:

  • Flow, pressure, temperature, and level transmitters

  • Control valves and actuators

  • Analytical equipment (if applicable)

  • Diagnose and repair instrumentation and electrical issues in a timely manner.

  • Perform preventive and predictive maintenance activities.

Troubleshooting & Technical Support

  • Respond to plant issues impacting process control systems and instrumentation.
  • Work with operations and engineering teams to resolve process upsets and equipment failures.
  • Analyze trends and data to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.

Compliance & Safety

  • Ensure all work complies with company policies, safety standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in safety audits, risk assessments, and incident investigations.
  • Follow lockout/tagout (LOTO) and other safety procedures.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, calibrations, and system modifications.
  • Update P&IDs, loop sheets, and control documentation as needed.
  • Generate reports on equipment performance and maintenance metrics.

Site Support

  • Provide technical support during plant startups, shutdowns, and outages.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams across sites to standardize best practices.

Qualifications

Education

  • Associate degree or technical certification in:
  • Instrumentation & Controls
  • Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Automation or related field

OR equivalent hands-on experience.

  • Score of 75 or better on the NCCER Industrial Electrician test

Experience

  • 2-5+ years of experience in process control, instrumentation, or industrial maintenance.
  • Experience in manufacturing, chemical, or industrial environments preferred.

Technical Skills

  • Knowledge of PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.).

  • Experience with DCS systems (e.g., Honeywell, Emerson DeltaV, Yokogawa).

  • Strong understanding of process instrumentation and control loops.

  • Ability to read and interpret:

  • P&IDs

  • Electrical schematics

  • Loop diagrams

  • Familiarity with calibration tools and diagnostic equipment.

Soft Skills

  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • High attention to detail and commitment to safety.

Work Environment & Requirements

  • Ability to work in industrial environments (heat, noise, confined spaces).
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and on-call rotations as needed.
  • Physical ability to lift equipment and perform fieldwork tasks.
