Incumbent serves as a Probation Officer for the Steuben County Probation Department.
Officer Requirements:
Bachelor Degree from an accredited college or university.
Ability to successfully pass a written State exam.
Working knowledge of local, state, and federal regulations and standard policies as well as procedures of juvenile code and criminal code.
Ability to serve on 24-hour on-call and the ability to respond swiftly, rationally and decisively to emergencies as needed.
Obtain and maintain State required certifications.
Knowledge of Evidence Based Practices.
ILEA Firearms qualified. 40-hour ILEA Pre-Basic Course Qualified.
Officer’s Duties:
Ability to classify offenders according to the Indiana Risk Assessment.
The officer duties/responsibilities are but not limited to home/employment checks, search’s, delivering paperwork, drug/alcohol testing, and documentation of home/employment checks, driving county vehicles, use of radios/phone and training.
Being present for duty with all required equipment.
Closely monitor compliance of program rules and any special conditions ordered by the Court by making home visits and work visits on a frequent, but random basis.
Document all violations and process them appropriately.
Conduct drug screens as needed and maintain the chain of custody.
Testify in court as needed
Supervise felony offenders.
Prepare Presentence Investigations for the Steuben County Superior Court and the Steuben County Circuit Court.
Attend all required trainings.
Other duties as assigned by the Chief Probation Officer and/or immediate supervisor.

Difficulty of Work:
Incumbent performs as variety of duties which are broad in scope and require application of sound judgment based on education, experience and training. Daily decisions are frequently based on consideration of many variables and potential interrelationships. Guidelines are detailed and well-established, requiring independent judgment in adapting to individual cases and situations.
Responsibility:
Incumbent works according to standard Department policies and procedures, and standard practices of the profession, exercising independent judgment in determining disposition of assigned offenders. Incumbent refers to supervisor in usual or unprecedented situations, such as unclear legal codes or problems with another agency. Work is periodically reviewed for soundness of judgment, attainment of objectives, and compliance with Department policies and procedures.
Personal Work Relationships:
Incumbent maintains frequent contact with co-workers, other County departments, offenders and their families, attorneys, community service agencies, victims, counselors, Court and law enforcement personnel for purposes of exchanging and explaining information, and supervising and assisting offenders.
Physical Effort and Work Environment:
Incumbent performs a majority of duties in an office environment, in a courtroom, in the jail and while conducting home visits which may involve climbing flights of stairs, lifting/carrying objects weighing less than 25 pounds, and exposure to potentially violent/irate individuals. Incumbent occasionally works weekend, evening and/or extended hours, and occasionally travels out of town for training, sometimes overnight. Incumbent serves on 24-hour call on a rotation basis.
