    JOB SUMMARY

    The Unit Clerk is responsible for secretarial support on the pateint care unit, to include data retrieval and compilation, record keeping, communication, and coordination of hospital services.

    JOB REQUIREMENTS

    Minimum Education

    • High school deploma or equivalent.
    • CPR required.

    Minimum Work Experience

    • Previous clerical and computer experience preferred.

    Required Skills

    • Ability to follow directions and to perform work independently according to department

    standards.

    • Must be emotionally mature and able to prioritize tasks.
    • Strong communication skills.
    • Must be able to work in an environment of high stress an assist in the care of the serious to critically ill patients.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Answers telephone, call system, and communicates with staff and visitors in a professional manner and routes information received to the appropriate personnel.
    • Completes paperwork for the admission, transfer, and discharge of patients in a timely manner.
    • Transcribes physician's orders accurately and in a timely manner including the MAR, and computer entry.
    • Notifies assigned nurse of new orders, including stat medications or interventions when needed.
    • Demonstrates ability to process orders during computer down time.
    • Maintains the medical record appropriately stocked with necessary blank forms. Ensures that all forms are accurately identified with patient ID labels.
    • Thins medical records as needed. Disassembles records of discharged, transferred patients and forwards to medical record dept. in a timely manner.
    • Places necessary forms on chart for planned procedures such as permits check lists, etc., ensuring proper identification labeling.
    • Coordinates scheduled diagnostic with staff and various departments.
    • Communicates information regarding specific patient information clearly with necessary staff.
    • Demonstrates working knowledge of governing regulations such as HIPAA, OSHA, and JC.
    • Recognizes and responds to priorities in patient care.
    • Puts up stock order for the unit.
    • Delivers specimens to appropriate department, after confirming labeling and placing collection information in order entry, in a timely manner.
    • Monitors unit for innovative ways to improve information gathering, improve patient care, etc. and communicates ideas with area supervisors.
    • Ensures that stock room and nutrition room are kept straight and orderly.

    NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    • Completes Healthstream as assigned.
    • Attends and completes unit competency programs annually.
    • Participates in at least 75% of staff or ward clerk staff meetings annually.
    • Floats to other units as assigned.
    • Other duties as assigned
