Position: Security Guard

Reports to: Clinic Manager

Classification: Full-time, exempt

Compensation: $20-$23 per hour

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Schedule

This is a PRN role and thus is not guaranteed a set number of hours per week. When possible, shifts will be scheduled with advance notice. At times this position will be asked for short-term availability (i.e. to cover when there is an unexpected call-off by our full time security staff).

Job Summary

The Security Guard is responsible for watching over Hope Clinic buildings and grounds to prevent fire, theft, vandalism, and unauthorized entry. The Security Guard will also assist staff with de-escalation efforts if visitors and/or patients become unruly, and isolation of the individual(s) when de-escalation efforts are unsuccessful. During emergencies, medical or otherwise, the Security Guard will help to keep staff, patients, and guests safe and provide clear direction if evacuation is needed. If environmentally hazardous situations arise, the security guard will assist management to ensure the safety of staff, patients, and guests.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Periodically tours the clinic and surrounding building, examining doors, windows, and other possible entry points to determine that they are secure and not tampered with or broken.
  • Monitors surveillance/camera equipment throughout the day. Watches and inspects all unattended bags or items left in or near the clinic.
  • Meets with all incoming delivery personnel. Inspects and signs off on deliveries to the clinic.
  • Approaches potentially unauthorized persons for questioning, re-routes or isolates them, or telephones police for assistance, according to circumstances.
  • Sounds fire signal to alert fire department and clinic personnel in event of fire, assists in staff and patient evacuation, assists in fire extinguishing, if safely possible.
  • Checks interior emergency exit lighting and access routes to emergency and fire entrances. Escorts personnel to and from parking lots or between buildings as requested.
  • Answers patients and visitors questions concerning locations of various offices, rooms, and other clinic areas.
  • Helps to maintain a peaceful environment, approaching patients and visitors to advise them of our clinic rules and requirements when needed.

Specific Duties

  • Maintains a professional and empathetic approach when interacting with patients and visitors, including utilization of de-escalation efforts when patients or visitors become visibly upset, angry, or unruly.
  • Maintains open effective communication with co-workers and management.
  • Reports all security issues to management in a timely fashion.
  • Reports patients or visitors experiencing medical concerns to management or a medical staff member in a timely manner.

Qualifications

  • Speaks, reads and writes fluent English. Bi-lingual applicants are highly encouraged to apply.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Experience and/or training in a healthcare environment is preferred.
  • Current Illinois driver's license required. Must possess a good driving record clear of moving violations in the past five (5) years and no major driving offenses (DUI, etc.).
  • Detail-oriented, organized, empathetic, and punctual.

Physical Requirements

  • Work requires lifting or carrying objects which could be in excess of 50 lbs with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • May stand for up to 8 hours a day, walk, climb stairs, and climb ladders while on duty.
  • Full field of vision needed to detect unauthorized persons, malfunctioning equipment, or fire.
