Principal Job Description

Summary: Washtenaw International High School and Middle Academy (WIHI/WIMA) seeks a principal who is deeply aligned with the mission and values of an International Baccalaureate World School and committed to fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and student-centered learning community. The ideal candidate is an ethical, reflective leader who can engage staff, students, families, and partner districts in continuous improvement, while skillfully managing the complexities of IB programs, competency-based learning, and collaborative educational environments. This leader will bring strong instructional expertise, cultural proficiency, and a demonstrated ability to build trust, develop teacher leadership, and advance equity through data-informed decision-making, clear communication, and a steady focus on maintaining a positive, mission-driven school culture. Essential Duties & Responsibilities include the following:

  • Lead and engage staff, students, families, and community members in the principles and value of the International Baccalaureate education
  • Oversee and ensure compliance with IB requirements, including authorization, policies, procedures, and program expectations
  • Develop and implement mission-centered school goals, policies, and practices
  • Support and coordinate IB (MYP and DP) curriculum development, course approval, and master scheduling
  • Facilitate staff meetings and lead ongoing professional learning, mentorship, and induction systems
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for program-wide communication and WEOC collaboration and decision-making
  • Clearly communicate expectations, policies, and procedures to students, staff, and families
  • Coordinate student discipline using restorative practices in collaboration with staff
  • Lead data-informed program evaluation and continuous school improvement planning
  • Design and oversee mentoring systems for new staff, emphasizing instructional quality, IB practices, and teacher leadership
  • Supervise, coach, and evaluate teachers, counselors, and administrative support staff using the established evaluation system
  • Collaborate with WEOC leadership on matters of human resources and organizational matters
  • Partner with staff to support students' academic progress and well-being
  • Promote the school's mission, vision, and achievements through effective communication with all stakeholders
  • Oversee pupil accounting processes in partnership with appropriate personnel
  • Support teacher-powered governance structures and school improvement efforts
  • Lead crisis response, safety planning, and threat assessment processes
  • Foster strong partnerships with all participating WEOC districts
  • Lead equity initiatives across the school community
  • Implement systems and structures that sustain a positive, inclusive school culture
  • Regularly reinforce the school's mission, instructional model, and community values
  • Stay current on best practices in IB programming, instructional practice and state requirements
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required skills and qualifications:

  • Experience with student centered, inquiry based learning and standards based grading
  • Experienced and knowledgeable about International Baccalaureate education environments

Additional details:

Preference for leaders with International Baccalaureate school experience.

Work the year-round school calendar of 230 contracted work days, and present in the school on days school is in session and for program planning/ collaboration with others during non school days.

Attend and represent the school during extra curricular, student/parent engagement, and community events.

Qualifications: Valid Michigan secondary teaching certificate and Michigan administration certificate with necessary endorsement(s).

Education and/or Experience: Qualification and certification to teach middle and high school. Experience, qualification and interest in IB education, cultural proficiency, educational leadership and curriculum development.

Language Skills: Highly proficient in written and verbal communication.

Technical Skills: Ability to use computer technology for research, data management, communication and other instruction. Experience with one-to-one technology programs.

Reasoning Ability: Highly proficient in subject area reasoning, problem solving, organizational dynamics and emotional intelligence.

Physical Demands: Capability to perform duties normally associated with secondary teaching.
