    Description

Amazon Web Services is seeking a high-impact Principal Product Manager with a deep specialization in mechanical infrastructure to define and execute the product strategy for our next-generation infrastructure and facility systems. As a technical leader, you will bridge the gap between abstract business/scale goals and physical engineering realities, ensuring our designs are fit for purpose, scalable, and cost-effective.

AWS Infrastructure Services owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. In other words, we're the people who keep the cloud running. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain - and we're looking for talented people who want to help.

As a Principal Mechanical Product Manager you will be responsible for defining the "what" and "why" of our mechanical strategy, ensuring alignment across cross-functional teams, and driving critical decisions even in the face of complexity or resistance. The leader in this role has the ability to make tough calls, stand behind decisions, and navigate obstacles. You must be comfortable pushing back on stakeholders and driving alignment.

You are the voice of the business at the front of the pipeline - the person who decides which platforms earn the organization's capacity, and why. You own the customer need each platform serves, its system-level requirements, and how it fits into the broader roadmap. You own the technical requirements strategy that sets the foundation for timing, cost, and execution. You own the mechanism by which field, cost, and customer signals are collected, converted into requirements for a new platform or its next revision, and prioritized against everything else in the portfolio. You bring rigor to the front end so that platforms enter the pipeline with validated business requirements, clear boundaries, and a defensible priority.

    Key job responsibilities

    • System-Level Ownership: Own and understand how mechanical designs impact the broader infrastructure (e.g., cooling, electrical, structural). Evaluate how new business requests affect the entire fleet and propose integrated solutions.
    • Product Strategy & Roadmap: Define and communicate a multi-year vision, strategy, and product roadmap for advanced mechanical infrastructure products. Coordinate between multiple teams to develop compelling business cases to substantiate business value, define product prioritization, and outline budget and resources required to implement product roadmaps.
    • Modular Standardization: Standardize complex mechanical systems into modular, prefabricated skids to compress on-site data center construction and commissioning timelines.
    • Global Compliance & Localization: Ensure the core mechanical product line remains compatible across multiple global geographic zones, accommodating varying regional building codes, environmental constraints, and extreme climate variations.
    • Strategic Alignment & Vision: Lead the definition of challenges at the facility and product levels. Ensure all stakeholders are aligned on the path forward, particularly when navigating complex transitions.
    • Value Engineering & Decision Making: Actively challenge existing assumptions regarding cost and complexity.
    • Technical Leadership: Serve as a subject matter expert who can evaluate technical trade-offs.
    • Systems Thinking: Ability to see the big picture and understand the upstream/downstream impacts of mechanical design choices on electrical and structural systems.

    A day in the life

Your day moves between signal and strategy. You might begin by synthesizing customer needs and cost data into a sharpened requirement for a platform's next revision, then join a pre-production readiness review where you and a Principal Engineer pressure-test whether an existing product can serve a new customer need or whether a new variant is truly justified. In the afternoon you might defend a platform's priority against competing portfolio demands in front of leadership, armed with the business case for why it earns the org's capacity.

Your internal stakeholders span the full lifecycle: Principal Engineers, TPMs, product team, engineering, sourcing, industrialization and construction partners. The problems you solve are the hardest ones at the front of the funnel: what the business actually needs, whether we already have it, and what it is worth relative to everything else.

    It’s Always Day 1
At Amazon, it’s always “Day 1.” Now, what does this mean and why does it matter? It means that our approach remains the same as it was on Amazon’s very first day – to make smart, fast decisions, stay nimble, invent, and stay focused on delighting our customers. In our 2016 shareholder letter, Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos shared his thoughts on how to keep up a Day 1 company mindset. “Staying in Day 1 requires you to experiment patiently, accept failures, plant seeds, protect saplings, and double down when you see customer delight,” he wrote. “A customer-obsessed culture best creates the conditions where all of that can happen.” You can read the full letter here

    Our Leadership Principles
Our Leadership Principles help us keep a Day 1 mentality. They aren’t just a pretty inspirational wall hanging. Amazonians use them, every day, whether they’re discussing ideas for new projects, deciding on the best solution for a customer’s problem, or interviewing candidates.
