Description

DynaChrg is seeking a Senior EV Charging & Energy Systems Engineer to lead the technical evaluation, onboarding, validation, deployment, and operational support of commercial AC Level 2 and DC fast-charging equipment within the EVES platform.


This role owns the charger-facing side of EVES: EVSE hardware and firmware, charging communications, OCPP and CSMS connectivity, interoperability testing, charger networking, commissioning, OEM coordination, and production troubleshooting.


The successful candidate has real hands-on experience working with commercial EV charging equipment and understands how chargers operate in the field—from installation and commissioning through backend communications, charging transactions, remote commands, metering, firmware, and ongoing operational support.


Direct commercial EV charging experience is mandatory. This is not a generic IT, API, telecom, or non-EV IoT engineering role.


This position works closely with DynaChrg’s software, product, QA, field operations, and customer teams, as well as charger manufacturers and other technology partners.


Key Responsibilities


EVSE Equipment Evaluation and OEM Onboarding


  • Evaluate commercial AC Level 2 and DC fast-charging equipment for compatibility with DynaChrg’s EVES platform.

  • Review charger hardware, firmware, electrical interfaces, connector configurations, networking capabilities, metering, payment options, security features, and operating capabilities.

  • Develop and maintain technical requirements for approved EVSE manufacturers and charger models.

  • Lead the technical onboarding process for new charger OEMs, charger models, and firmware releases.

  • Define required firmware versions, charger configurations, network settings, security parameters, and backend requirements.

  • Maintain an approved EVSE hardware, firmware, and interoperability compatibility matrix.

  • Work directly with charger OEM engineering teams to resolve equipment, firmware, configuration, and communication issues.

  • Participate in charger selection and technical approval processes for DynaChrg projects and customers.

EV Charging Protocols and EVES / CSMS Connectivity


  • Lead the technical integration of EVSE equipment with DynaChrg’s EVES platform and Charging Station Management System.

  • Configure, validate, and troubleshoot charger communications using OCPP 1.6J and OCPP 2.0.1.

  • Validate charger registration, authorization, status notifications, charging transactions, meter values, remote commands, diagnostics, fault reporting, firmware updates, and smart-charging functions.

  • Review and analyze OCPP messages, charger logs, backend telemetry, protocol traces, and network captures to identify root causes of integration issues.

  • Identify charger-specific protocol deviations, configuration limitations, and interoperability constraints.

  • Document known issues, approved workarounds, required firmware versions, and OEM escalation paths.

  • Support integrations involving ISO 15118 / Plug & Charge, OCPI, payment systems, cellular connectivity, and other EV charging interfaces as applicable.

Interoperability, Testing, and Quality Assurance


  • Develop and execute charger qualification, acceptance, interoperability, regression, and production-readiness test plans.

  • Perform lab validation before approving new charger models or firmware versions for deployment.

  • Validate charger behavior against DynaChrg requirements, OCPP standards, customer needs, and applicable industry requirements.

  • Coordinate technical testing with charger manufacturers, software teams, test laboratories, certification organizations, and technology partners.

  • Support test automation, protocol validation tools, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and repeatable EVSE qualification processes.

  • Maintain technical test evidence, issue logs, acceptance criteria, and qualification records.

  • Recommend improvements to EVES product requirements, charger onboarding standards, and testing processes based on field experience.

Charger Networking, Security, and Communications


  • Define and validate charger connectivity requirements for cellular/LTE/5G, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, VPN, and private-network environments.

  • Troubleshoot EVSE communication issues involving TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, NAT, firewall, proxy, VPN, cellular, Ethernet, and Wi-Fi.

  • Support secure charger communications using HTTPS, TLS, mutual TLS, digital certificates, trust chains, and PKI-related charger configuration where required.

  • Work with DynaChrg network and cybersecurity teams to establish secure, reliable charger-to-backend communications.

  • Validate charger connectivity and recovery behavior under real production-network conditions.

  • Support charger cellular modem, SIM/eSIM, and remote connectivity requirements when applicable.

Installation, Commissioning, and Production Support


  • Review EVSE installation requirements, technical prerequisites, and commissioning readiness.

  • Support field teams during charger installation, configuration, startup, and commissioning.

  • Validate charger-to-EVES connectivity following installation.

  • Perform or support commissioning tests, including:

  • Charger connectivity and network recovery

  • Charger availability and status reporting

  • User authorization

  • Charging-session initiation and termination

  • Metering and transaction data

  • Remote start, stop, reset, and diagnostics

  • Fault reporting and alerts

  • Backend communications

  • Firmware and configuration validation

  • Develop practical installation, commissioning, troubleshooting, and technical escalation procedures.

  • Serve as a senior technical escalation point for complex charger, firmware, networking, protocol, and interoperability issues.

  • Coordinate root-cause analysis and corrective action between DynaChrg teams and charger manufacturers.

  • Identify recurring production issues and recommend firmware, configuration, software, process, or operational improvements.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Telecommunications Engineering, or a closely related technical discipline.

  • 5+ years of relevant engineering, systems, or technical product experience.

  • At least 3 years of direct, hands-on commercial EV charging / EVSE experience.

  • Hands-on experience with commercial AC Level 2 and/or DC fast-charging equipment.

  • Experience integrating EVSE equipment with a CSMS or charging-management backend using OCPP.

  • Practical knowledge of OCPP 1.6J and/or OCPP 2.0.1.

  • Strong understanding of EVSE architecture, charger operation, charging workflows, charger firmware, and charger-to-backend communications.

  • Experience troubleshooting charger logs, OCPP messages, backend telemetry, and network traffic.

  • Strong understanding of IP networking and connected-device communications.

  • Experience troubleshooting TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, routing, firewall, cellular, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, VPN, and secure communications issues.

  • Experience performing system integration, interoperability testing, validation, commissioning, or production support.

  • Ability to work directly with charger OEMs, software engineers, field teams, customers, and external technology partners.

  • Strong technical documentation, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to work effectively in office, laboratory, and field environments.

  • Ability to work on-site in Calabasas, California, with occasional local travel for testing, commissioning, or customer support.

Preferred Qualifications


  • Experience with OCPP 1.6J, OCPP 2.0.1, and OCPP 2.1.

  • Experience with ISO 15118, Plug & Charge, DIN SPEC 70121, or EVSE certificate management.

  • Experience with OCPI, EV roaming, or charging payment-system integrations.

  • Experience with smart charging, charging profiles, energy management, or dynamic charging controls.

  • Familiarity with EVSE metering and revenue-grade metering concepts.

  • Experience with Wireshark, protocol analyzers, EVSE diagnostic tools, or automated test environments.

  • Experience with payment terminals, cellular modems, SIM/eSIM management, or private cellular networks.

  • Familiarity with EVSE-related standards and requirements, including UL, IEC, NEC Article 625, FCC, CSA, and regional charging requirements.

  • Familiarity with OpenADR, demand response, V2G, bidirectional charging, or DER concepts.

Scope Clarification


This role is responsible for EV charging equipment, EVES platform connectivity, charger interoperability, and operational reliability.


It does not own electrical-service design, power-flow studies, electrical-capacity modeling, utility power-system engineering, or load-balancing algorithm development. Those responsibilities are managed through DynaChrg’s separate Power and Energy Systems engineering function.
