We are seeking a Principal Digital Factory Engineer to design, develop, integrate, and support advanced digital factory solutions deployed across multiple Raytheon manufacturing sites. This senior engineering role contributes to scalable software development, reliable IIoT connectivity, and integrated data systems that enable real-time factory insights and continuous operational improvement.

What You Will Do

The Principal Digital Factory Engineer is responsible for building and integrating digital manufacturing applications and IIoT systems across CFI's five functional product domains:

1. Manufacturing Process Monitoring & Equipment Maintenance

2. Shop Floor Management & Optimization

3. Digital Operator Interface & Smart Tools

4. Manufacturing Product Digital Thread & Factory Digital Twin

5. Factory OT Analytics, Metrics & Common API / Data Transfer

This role performs full-cycle software development while partnering closely with cross-functional engineering, operations, OT, IT, and data teams. The engineer ensures reliable data flows, scalable application design, and high-quality software that supports factory operations across multiple locations. Preferred candidates also bring higher-level capabilities in architectural thinking and cross-team technical leadership.

Software Development & Integration

• Design, develop, and maintain digital factory applications using Ignition, Python, SQL, and related technologies.
• Build operator interfaces, dashboards, backend workflows, data queries, and automated logic supporting factory operations.
• Integrate applications with databases, historians, IIoT devices, and central data services using modern communication protocols.

Implement code aligned with team standards, ensuring maintainability, performance, and usability.

• Document features, technical decisions, and system configurations for clarity and long-term sustainment.

IIoT Connectivity & Equipment Integration

• Connect factory equipment, sensors, PLCs, and gateways using protocols such as Modbus/TCP, OPC-UA, EIP, and MQTT.
• Configure data ingestion pipelines to support real-time monitoring, analytics, and operator-facing tools.
• Ensure reliable connectivity between OT systems, digital factory applications, and enterprise platforms.
• Troubleshoot communication issues, data flow interruptions, or equipment interface problems.

Data Engineering & Factory Insights Enablement

• Build and optimize historian tags, data models, and analytics feeds used for factory metrics and reporting.
• Support digital thread and digital twin initiatives by enabling consistent and accurate data movement across systems.
• Partner with data architects and analytics teams to ensure appropriate data access, quality, and structure.

DevOps & Release Support Use

• Azure DevOps or similar tools to manage source control, pipelines, builds, and release processes.
• Validate deployments, troubleshoot build issues, and support continuous integration and delivery best practices.
• Help maintain reliable multi-site deployment patterns that support enterprise scaling.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with manufacturing engineers, product owners, OT specialists, test engineers, and IT teams to align solutions with factory needs.
• Participate in design reviews, requirements discussions, technical investigations, and roadmap planning sessions.
• Support multi-team integrations, ensuring applications function correctly within broader digital factory workflows.

Root Cause Correction & Sustainment

• Lead technical investigations into application defects, connectivity failures, data inconsistencies, or performance issues.
• Implement corrective actions that improve reliability and prevent recurrence.
• Provide factory support and troubleshooting for critical digital systems.

Leadership & Mentorship

• Mentor and guide junior and mid-level engineers on software best practices, troubleshooting, and system integration.
• Provide technical input to product owners and influence solution design decisions.
• Help evolve development standards, integration patterns, and engineering best practices across CFI.

Qualifications You Must Have

• Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience unless prohibited by local laws/regulations.
• Strong experience building applications using Ignition (Perspective, scripting, gateway configuration).
• Experience in Python, SQL, REST APIs, JSON, and industrial communication protocols.

Qualifications We Prefer

• Experience developing dashboards, interfaces, backend processes, and automated workflows.
• Ability to integrate equipment, gateways, sensors, and OT systems into digital factory applications.
• Experience with Azure DevOps or comparable tools for code management and CI/CD.
• Strong collaboration skills with the ability to work across multiple technical and operational teams.
• Experience supporting technology deployment across multiple manufacturing sites.
• Familiarity with enterprise IIoT patterns, unified data architectures, MQTT brokers, or historian/analytics platforms.
• Experience contributing to system design discussions, standards development, or architectural pattern creation.
• Knowledge of MES/CMES integrations, digital thread systems, or factory data pipelines.
• Experience mentoring engineers or contributing to cross-team technical planning.
• Ignition Gold Certification or willingness to achieve within the first year.
• Understanding of OT cybersecurity fundamentals and secure data design practices.

The salary range for this role is 107,500 USD - 204,500 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate's work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
