A day in this role
At 7:00am you’re at your station, reviewing the day’s build schedule. You calibrate your electronic height gauge, zero your micrometer, and open the latest customer print. By 8:00am, you’re deep into a complex assembly, translating GD&T feature control frames into a methodical inspection plan. Throughout the morning, you verify critical dimensions to customer drawings and flow downs, documenting each result and collaborating with operations to address any nonconformances you spot early.
After lunch, you program and run the CMM to validate tight-tolerance features (to +/- 0.0005”), switching to a microscope and borescope to evaluate fine details that matter for function and fit. You wrap the day by compiling a clean digital package for the customer, completing all required production and quality records, and restoring your area to a safe, orderly state in line with SME standards.
What you’ll do
- Inspect mechanical assemblies and sub-components using precision tools (electronic height gauges, calipers, gauge pins, microscopes, borescopes, and more).
- Interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T, including feature controls, tolerances, and functional requirements.
- Verify dimensions against customer prints and flow downs; document results and escalate issues promptly.
- Partner daily with operations to ensure products meet requirements before they move forward.
- Operate equipment safely per SME standards; maintain a clean, safe, and organized work area.
- Complete all required production and quality paperwork; compile customer-ready digital documentation packages.
- Take on additional duties as needed to support the team.
