    Life Unlimited at Smith+Nephew

At Smith+Nephew, we create technology that helps people move beyond their limits. Join a team where your craftsmanship directly supports the manufacture of high-quality medical components.

    A day in this role

You arrive to a clean, organized cell and review your work orders. After selecting raw material, you set up CNC and manual equipment for the first run of the day—dialing in tool offsets, loading programs where needed, and confirming fixturing. With machines cycling, you rotate between:

    • Operating multiple machines at once to keep throughput high
    • Running turning, milling, grinding, drilling, tapping, EDM, and honing operations to tight tolerances
    • Checking critical dimensions with precision inspection tools to verify conformance
    • Troubleshooting any production or development issues that appear mid-run

Between jobs, you collaborate with engineers and toolmakers on fixtures, tooling strategies, process improvements, and part design feedback. You’ll also coach less-experienced operators, handle minor fixture repairs or adjustments, and, when needed, develop simple-to-moderate CNC programs and work with DNC equipment.

    How you’ll contribute

    • Prepare materials, stage tooling, and process work orders efficiently
    • Complete all records and production documentation accurately and on time
    • Follow company policies, quality procedures, FDA/QSR requirements, and other applicable regulations
    • Perform labor transactions and barcode scans to maintain data integrity
    • Engage in team-based continuous improvement activities
    • Maintain equipment, uphold 5S standards, and meet all health, safety, environmental, and job hazard expectations
    • Carry out other related duties and the tasks typically expected of lower-level machinists as required

    What you bring

    • Education: High school diploma or equivalent
    • Experience: 2–3+ years of CNC turning experience
    • Certifications: Completed certifications across multiple manufacturing disciplines
    • Physical: Able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs

    Core strengths

    • Hands-on mechanical aptitude with manual machining proficiency
    • Equipment diagnostics and problem-solving skills
    • Comfort working with minimal supervision in a team-focused environment

If you’re energized by building precision parts that improve lives, you’ll thrive here.

    About Company

The Group has a history dating back 160 years to the family enterprise of Thomas James Smith who opened a small pharmacy in Hull, England in 1856. On his death in 1896, his nephew Horatio Nelson Smith took over the management of the business. J Smith) met with an envoy of the French President in London. The company was awarded a contract to supply £350,000 of surgical and field dressings, to be delivered in five months. By the late 1990s, Smith & Nephew had expanded into being a diverse healthcare conglomerate with operations across the globe, including various medical devices, personal care products and traditional and pioneering woundcare treatments. In 1998, Smith & Nephew announced a major restructuring to focus management attention and investment on three business units — wound management, endoscopy and orthopaedics — which offered high growth and margin opportunities. Smith & Nephew was incorporated and listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1937 and in 1999 the Group was also listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2001, Smith & Nephew became a constituent member of the FTSE-100 index in the UK. This means that Smith & Nephew is included in the top 100 companies traded on the London Stock Exchange measured in terms of market capitalisation. Today, Smith & Nephew is a public limited company incorporated and headquartered in the UK and doing business in many countries around the world.
