Summary:
To provide professional, technical, and patient-centered polysomnographic testing, scoring, and education in accordance with the AASM standards, UNC Health Lenoir policies, and departmental protocols. The polysomnography technician delivers diagnostic and therapeutic sleep care tailored to the developmental and clinical needs of each patient.
All procedures are performed in accordance with departmental protocols, AASM standards, and UNC Health Lenoir policies. The technician provides safe, age-appropriate, patient-centered care and communicates effectively with patients, families, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities:
Technicians will perform sleep diagnostic procedures as outlined in the departmental procedure manual, with appropriate training provided for all sleep equipment.
Collects, analyzes and integrates patient information in order to identify and meet the patient-specific needs (physical/mental limitations, current emotional/physiological status regarding the testing procedure, pertinent medical/social history).c. Determines final testing parameters/procedures in conjunction with the ordering physician or clinical director and protocols.
Reviews the patients history and verifies the medical order.
Follows all sleep center protocols for in-center and out-of-center testing.
Verifies patient identity, completes registration for procedure, and obtains consent for the study upon arrival.
Explains the procedure clearly according to their order and developmental stage, and answers any questions related.
Select, calibrate, and troubleshoot equipment to ensure optimal data quality.
Applies electrodes and sensors according to AASM standards.
Performs PAP interface fitting and desensitization.
Provide instruction and education to patient and family members.
Ensure following correct PPE and universal patient policies.
Additional workload-dependent responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Provide enhanced care for patients requiring additional assistance with basic needs.
Coordinate with caregivers, transport staff, or facility representatives to ensure continuity of care and accurate communication regarding patient needs.
Adjust workflow and prioritization to accommodate high-acuity or high-needs patients while maintaining overall lab efficiency and patient safety.
