Provides comprehensive law enforcement, safety, and security services to students, faculty, staff, and visitors through the efficient use of departmental resources. Enforces applicable federal laws, North Carolina General Statutes, and Meredith College policies.
This position is classified as essential personnel under College policy and is subject to requirements regarding essential personnel. Performs essential police duties during inclement weather, emergency situations, or as campus needs dictate.
This role also supports a developing campus police department by contributing to the continuous improvement of operations, procedures, and service delivery, while helping to foster a culture of professionalism, accountability, and community engagement.
Duties:
Responds to all calls for service and requests for assistance from Meredith College students, faculty, staff, and visitors
Exercises independent judgment to determine appropriate actions to resolve incidents, including detention, search, arrest, issuance of citations, and criminal charge filing in accordance with North Carolina law
Applies only the minimum level of force necessary, consistent with training, law, and departmental policy
Patrols campus by vehicle and on foot; operates a law enforcement patrol vehicle during day and night shifts
Controls access to campus facilities and designated areas, including the Greenway, during established hours
Responds to calls, fire alarms, and intrusion alarms, including suspicious persons, and takes appropriate enforcement or protective action
Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants; collects, preserves, and documents physical and digital evidence
Prepares detailed written reports, case files, and documentation in accordance with departmental policy and legal standards
Provides testimony in criminal, traffic, and judicial proceedings as required
Provides traffic, parking, and crowd control for campus events and special functions
Conducts safety and security inspections of campus facilities, including checking doors, windows, and lighting
Renders emergency and non-emergency medical assistance, including First Aid, CPR, and AED use, until relieved by medical professionals
Participates in community-oriented policing, crime prevention initiatives, campus outreach, and educational programming
Builds positive relationships with students, faculty, and staff through visibility, engagement, and service
May perform administrative duties such as campus bank deposits or other assignments as directed
Performs duties related to emergency response, disaster operations, and inclement weather safety responsibilities
Participates in the development and refinement of departmental practices, procedures, and service delivery models
Provides feedback to supervisors to support the growth and continuous improvement of a developing department
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
Knowledge of federal laws, North Carolina General Statutes, and College policies applicable to sworn law enforcement officers
Ability to analyze complex situations, exercise sound judgment, and use discretion when dealing with difficult or hostile individuals
Ability to observe and recall names, faces, and details; maintain accurate notes and reports
Skill in operating law enforcement equipment, including radios, vehicles, and defensive tools
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with diverse populations
Ability to understand and work within the scope of authority while applying policies and procedures consistently
Ability to adapt to evolving policies, procedures, and operational needs in a developing department
Commitment to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical conduct
Education & Experience:
High School Diploma or equivalent required
Current North Carolina Driver License with a clear driving history
Current certification as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer by the State of North Carolina (BLET), or ability to obtain certification within eight (8) months of hire
Training & Certification Requirements:
Successful completion of required in-service training and annual firearms qualification
Certification or ability to obtain certification in ASP baton, chemical agents, First Aid, CPR, and AED
Compliance with North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission requirements
Successful completion of a basic physical fitness assessment prior to appointment and/or during probationary period, consistent with departmental standards
Working conditions & physical demands:
Ability to work modified 3rd shift (6 p.m. - 2 a.m.), rotating shifts, including nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency call-back
Duties performed in office, vehicle, and outdoor environments; subject to varying weather conditions
May be required to remain on duty during inclement weather or emergencies when relief is unavailable
Medium work: ability to walk extended distances, stand for long periods, climb stairs, run as necessary, and lift up to 50 pounds
Ability to navigate physical obstacles and assist individuals experiencing medical or safety emergencies
Vision correctable to meet North Carolina law enforcement standards, including color vision requirements
