Job Description:

Job Title: Police Officer- Georgia Regional Hospital Atlanta  

Workplace: Georgia Regional Hospital Atlanta- Decatur, Ga.

Travel: up to 40% travel may be required based on operational needs, training, court, investigations, and support of other DBJDD facilities

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, serves as the Hospital Resource Officer (HRO) assigned to a DBHDD hospital campus. Provides law enforcement services, criminal investigations, emergency response, and public safety support to ensure the safety and security of patients, staff, visitors, contractors, and state property.The HRO serves as the primary sworn law enforcement officer assigned to the campus and works closely with the Campus Commander, Security Captain, hospital leadership, clinical staff, and external public safety agencies. Responsibilities include responding to criminal incidents, conducting investigations, coordinating patient elopement responses, supporting forensic patient operations, and maintaining a visible law enforcement presence throughout the campus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Provides law enforcement services throughout hospital grounds, buildings, parking areas, and other DBHDD-owned properties.
• Responds to crimes in progress, disturbances, emergencies, suspicious activity, and other incidents requiring police intervention.
• Conducts criminal investigations and prepares reports, statements, and related documentation.
• Collects, preserves, and processes evidence in accordance with department procedures.
• Conducts interviews and gathers information related to criminal and administrative investigations.
• Coordinates and participates in patient elopement investigations and recovery efforts.
• Assists with forensic patient admissions, transports, discharges, and other high-risk operations.
• Works closely with hospital leadership, clinical staff, security personnel, and community partners to address safety and security concerns.
• Provides guidance and support to security personnel during incidents and emergency operations.
• Conducts patrols of hospital property to deter criminal activity and promote safety.
• Assists with workplace violence prevention, threat assessments, and critical incident response activities.
• Coordinates with local law enforcement, fire, EMS, and other public safety agencies as needed.
• Participates in training programs, exercises, and community outreach activities.
• Maintains required certifications, training, and equipment readiness.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

  Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of law enforcement principles, criminal investigations, and evidence handling.
• Knowledge of behavioral health and forensic treatment environments.
• Ability to communicate effectively with patients, staff, visitors, law enforcement personnel, and the public.
• Ability to prepare accurate reports and investigative documentation.
• Ability to exercise sound judgment during emergencies and critical incidents.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships with hospital leadership and community partners.

  Minimum Qualifications

  Georgia POST-certified Peace Officer eligible to exercise the powers and duties of a peace officer in the State of Georgia. 3 years of police experience with a PBLE certification or equivalent.

  Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in hospital, campus, behavioral health, correctional, or institutional law enforcement.
• Experience conducting criminal investigations.
• Experience responding to crisis situations and high-risk incidents.
• Training in Crisis Intervention, Threat Assessment, or related disciplines.

  Minimum Qualifications:

  High school diploma/GED, Georgia P.O.S.T. certification, and four (4) years of experience required at the lower level Police Officer 1 (PSP120) or Police Officer 2 (PSP121) or position equivalent. Must successfully complete agency-specific required training.
