    Description

    Police Officers safeguard the lives and property of Coatesville’s residents while fostering public trust through proactive, community-oriented policing. Duties include routine patrol, emergency response, preliminary and follow-up investigations, traffic enforcement, report writing, courtroom testimony, and participation in outreach initiatives such as youth mentorship and safety workshops. Officers work 10- or 12-hour shifts that rotate to ensure 24/7 coverage.

    • Patrol assigned districts by foot and vehicle, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls.

    • Investigate crimes, gather evidence, interview witnesses, and prepare detailed reports.

    • Enforce traffic laws; conduct crash investigations and DUI enforcement.

    • Testify in criminal and traffic court proceedings.

    • Engage in community programs—Shop with a Cop, SafeRide car-seat clinics, Coffee with the Chief—to strengthen police-community relations.

    • Operate and maintain department-issued equipment, including body-worn cameras, in-car computers, and radar/LIDAR units.

    • Maintain physical readiness and complete in-service training as required by MPOETC.




    Requirements

    • U.S. citizen, at least 21 years old at time of appointment (testing may begin at 18).

    • High-school diploma or GED; college coursework in criminal justice preferred.

    • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license.

    • Ability to establish residency within 35 miles of Coatesville within six months of hire.

    • Free of disqualifying criminal convictions and domestic-violence prohibitions.

    • Successful completion of written exam, physical-agility test (MPOETC standards), oral board, background investigation, polygraph, medical, psychological, and drug screening.

    • Act 120 certification or willingness to attend a City-funded police academy.


    Preferred Attributes

    • Prior military, public-safety, criminal justice, or community-service experience.

    • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated conflict-resolution ability.

    • Proficiency with basic computer applications and report-writing.
