This role performs police patrol, preliminary and follow-up investigations, traffic regulation and enforcement, enforcement of criminal laws, arrests for felony and misdemeanor offenses, and other law enforcement activities. Police officers may be assigned to various units or functions within the Police Department, including but not limited to Road Patrol, Criminal Investigations, Traffic, Background Investigations, Training, Field Training, and specialized enforcement units. This recruitment may also be used to identify experienced applicants for initial or future specialized assignments based on documented qualifications, Department needs, and the applicable selection process.

Essential Functions

The essential functions listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional functions related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

  • Uphold rigorous standards of internal accountability, discipline, and ethical conduct consistent with best practices and City protocols.
  • Can be in pursuit, will apprehend, will arrest, and apply other restraints that is applicable to the situation at hand.
  • Can perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings.
  • Can pursue fleeing suspects and perform rescue operations.
  • Exercise independent judgement in determining when there is reasonable suspicion to detain, and when probable cause exists to search and arrest.

Typical Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • A Florida Law Enforcement Officer Certification is required to be obtained within 180 days of application and must be in place for appointment to the position.
  • A valid driver's license from any state (equivalent to a State of Florida Class E) may be utilized, and the ability to obtain the State of Florida license within thirty (30) days from the date of employment is required.

PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Progressively responsible, full-time sworn law enforcement experience beyond the minimum requirements of the position.
  • Training and experience conducting criminal investigations, particularly homicide or violent crime, major crimes, sexual offenses, crimes against children, financial or fraud investigations, property crimes, or other complex investigations.
  • Training and experience conducting traffic homicide, serious bodily injury, or complex crash investigations, including traffic crash reconstruction or related specialized training.
  • Experience conducting comprehensive background investigations for law enforcement, public safety, or other positions of public trust, including evaluating applicant suitability and preparing clear, well-supported investigative reports.
  • Experience as a law enforcement instructor or trainer. Current or prior Florida Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission instructor certification, high-liability instructor certification, or comparable specialized instructor credentials are preferred.
  • Successful experience as a Field Training Officer, Field Training Supervisor, or equivalent evaluator of probationary law enforcement officers, supported by recognized FTO training or certification.
  • Demonstrated ability to prepare thorough investigative reports, manage complex cases, testify effectively, evaluate performance, coach personnel, and work collaboratively across units and partner agencies.

SPECIALIZED ASSIGNMENT CONSIDERATION AND REQUIRED DOCUMENTATION:

This announcement is intended to establish a pool of qualified Certified Police Officer candidates and to identify applicants who may be considered for initial or future assignments in Criminal Investigations, Traffic Homicide Investigations, Major Crimes, Background Investigations, Training, or Field Training. All applicants are applying for appointment to the Certified Police Officer classification. Consideration for, or selection to, a specialized assignment is not guaranteed and will be based on verified qualifications, Department needs, available assignments, performance during the selection and probationary processes, and successful completion of required Department training.

An applicant seeking consideration for an investigative, instructor, trainer, or Field Training Officer assignment must identify each area of interest in the application and upload documentation demonstrating the applicants relevant qualifications, training, and experience. PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Physical demands refer to the requirements for physical exertion and coordination of limb and body movement.

The work requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, climbing, and operating a motor vehicle. The employee must be able to physically respond to emergency situations and may be required to run, pursue, restrain, apprehend, or assist in controlling individuals; enter or exit vehicles quickly; climb stairs, fences, or other obstacles; and work in confined or uneven areas. The employee may be required to lift, carry, push, pull, drag, or otherwise move objects or persons, including under emergency conditions. The work may require the use of physical force consistent with applicable law, department policy, and training.

The employee must possess the physical coordination, agility, strength, balance, and endurance necessary to safely perform essential law enforcement functions. The work may require wearing a duty uniform, body armor, duty equipment, and other protective equipment for extended periods.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Unavoidable hazards refer to the job conditions that may lead to injury or health hazards even though precautions have been taken.

Work is performed both indoors and outdoors in a variety of environments and under conditions that may be unpredictable and potentially hazardous. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather, extreme temperatures, traffic, loud or disruptive noises, hazardous substances, bodily fluids, communicable diseases, weapons, hostile or aggressive individuals, physical confrontations, and other potentially dangerous situations.

SICK LEAVE

Employees start to accrue sick leave effective at the start of the first full month of employment. Employees sick days shall be credited at the rate of eight (8) hours or one (1) working day for each month of completed service.

RETIREMENT PLAN

The retirement program for this position is the Florida Retirement System (FRS)

EDUCATIONAL REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM

Full-time employees are eligible to receive educational reimbursement for undergraduate and graduate coursework according to the following criteria and schedule of benefits. Employees who have completed their one (1) year of employment are eligible to participate in the Educational Reimbursement Program. With approval of the course(s) and subject to availability of funds, employees may be eligible for reimbursement (other than Masters Degree program courses) of 100% for a grade of A, 90% for a grade of B, and 75% for a grade of C. The City will provide reimbursement up to a maximum of $5,250.00 per tax (calendar) year based on current federal taxation requirements and limits, or as may be modified in future years. Per IRS regulations, tax-free benefits under an education assistance program are limited to $5,250 per employee, per year.

ANNUAL EVALUATIONS

An annual evaluation will be given on the anniversary date of employment. Annual evaluations are eligible for merit increases to commensurate with the City's pay for performance policy of up to 3%.

WELLNESS PROGRAMS

Employees on the Citys medical plan may participate in the City's Wellness Program to help offset the cost of their medical premiums. For new hires, points toward the Wellness Program can be accumulated starting from your date of hire through the last day of the year. Existing employees may begin participating in the program at any time. Please note, points will only be tallied on a calendar-year basis.
