Job Summary

Under general supervision, this position performs law enforcement duties to protect life and property through the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws. The Police Officer is responsible for responding to calls for service, conducting investigations, enforcing laws and ordinances, and supporting public safety through community-oriented policing.

Typical Duties

Law Enforcement & Patrol

  • Patrols assigned areas to prevent and detect criminal activity and enforce applicable laws and ordinances.
  • Conducts traffic stops/enforcing traffic laws
  • Responds to calls for service and takes appropriate enforcement or service action.
  • Maintains visible presence to deter crime and provide public assistance.

Investigations & Reporting

  • Conducts preliminary investigations of crimes, incidents, and complaints.
  • Investigates vehicle crashes
  • Interviews victims, witnesses, and suspects.
  • Collects, preserves, and documents evidence.
  • Prepares reports and case documentation in accordance with departmental standards.

Enforcement & Arrest Activities

  • Makes arrests and transports individuals to detention facilities.
  • Prepares search and arrest warrants
  • Serves warrants, subpoenas, and other legal documents.
  • Testifies in court and administrative proceedings as required.

Public Interaction & Community Policing

  • Provides information, assistance, and direction to the public.
  • Participates in community outreach, crime prevention, and problem-solving initiatives.
  • Builds and maintains positive relationships with community members and organizations.

Equipment & Systems Operation

  • Operates police vehicles, communication systems, and enforcement equipment.
  • Utilizes reporting systems and technology in support of law enforcement operations.

Safety & Compliance

  • Follows departmental policies, procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Maintains confidentiality of sensitive information.
  • Performs duties in a safe, professional, and ethical manner.

Other Duties

  • Assists other officers and agencies as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in support of law enforcement operations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must possess certification through the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy or be eligible for certification through reciprocity.

Licenses & Certifications

  • Must possess and maintain certification through the New Mexico Law Enforcement Academy.
  • Must possess a valid New Mexico driver's license and maintain a good driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of:

  • Law enforcement principles, procedures, and applicable laws.
  • Investigative techniques and report writing standards.
  • Community policing practices and public safety operations.

Skills in:

  • Communication and conflict resolution.
  • Operating law enforcement equipment and vehicles.
  • Report writing and documentation.

Ability to:

  • Make sound decisions in stressful and rapidly changing situations.
  • Perform law enforcement duties independently.
  • Communicate effectively with the public, staff, and other agencies.
  • Prepare accurate and complete reports.
  • Apply laws, policies, and procedures appropriately.

Physical Requirements

  • Work involves significant physical activity, including standing, walking, running, bending, and lifting.
  • May require physical exertion during enforcement activities, including restraining individuals.

  • Work is performed in field environments with exposure to varying weather conditions and emergency situations.
  • Requires shift work, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and call-back.
