Summary

Maintain the flow and drainage of water, air, and other gases by assembling, installing, and repairing pipes, fittings, and plumbing fixtures for the district. Maintain and provide for the safe condition and operation of all plumbing systems in district facilities.

Essential Functions

  1. Assemble, install, and repair pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, drainage, sprinkler, and gas systems according to specifications and plumbing codes. Perform pressure tests as needed.

  2. Determine sources of plumbing malfunctions and complete repairs on buildings, grounds, and equipment.

  3. Receive, prioritize, and complete work orders in a timely manner; allow time for emergency situations as needed.

  4. Select material and hardware and make time and material estimates. Maintain accurate records on material and labor used.

  5. Maintain inventory of district-owned tools, equipment, and materials. Perform preventive maintenance on tools and equipment. Ensure that equipment is in safe operating condition.

  6. Inspect jobs upon completion and ensure areas are clean.

  7. Follow established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting, climbing, operating a district vehicle, tools, and equipment, etc.

  8. Correct unsafe conditions in work area and report any conditions that are not correctable to supervisor immediately.

  9. Conduct preventive maintenance on all plumbing equipment and fixtures.

  10. Responsible for assuring jobs meet code compliance.

  11. Attendance at the work site is required to meet essential functions of the job.

Other Responsibilities

  1. Make routine decisions under general supervision in accordance with established priorities and policies.

  2. Participate in professional development activities as required by the district.

  3. Follow established safety procedures to perform job duties; support district/department goals.

  4. Maintain a professional code of ethics and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED); must possess and maintain a Texas journeyman or master plumber license; Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Backflow Prevention Assembly Tester License (must obtain within six (6) months of employment). Three (3) years experience in plumbing field; Texas/New Mexico driver's license; must be insurable by the district's auto liability insurance carrier. Subject to district drug and alcohol testing policy and regulation. Have knowledge of plumbing repairs, maintenance, installation techniques, plumbing codes; ability to read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, schematics, and written reference material; perform mathematical calculations; diagnose and resolve problems; use hand and power tools, pipe bender, propane torch, welding equipment, sewer rooter, heavy equipment, including forklift, trencher, backhoe. Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.

Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent district-wide travel. Must be able to lift, carry, push and/or pull up to fifty (50) pounds frequently; work under all weather conditions; exposure to extreme temperatures, chemicals, and loud noises; be adaptable to work a shift schedule and/or hours other than regularly assigned; extended periods of walking, standing, bending, reaching, climbing, kneeling, stooping, heavy lifting, and carrying. Work outside and around/on ladders, scaffolding, moving objects, or vehicles. Possible exposure to insects; ability to work around pesticides and herbicides or other potentially hazardous materials in a safe manner. Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions, around gas lines and fumes, and toxic chemicals, inside and outside.
