Job Summary
The Plant Electrician is responsible for the installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical systems and equipment used in a coal preparation plant. This role supports safe and continuous plant operations by ensuring all electrical components function reliably and in compliance with MSHA, company, and regulatory standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Install, maintain, and repair electrical systems including motors, MCCs, PLCs, VFDs, lighting, and control circuitry
- Troubleshoot electrical issues in processing equipment such as conveyors, crushers, screens, pumps, centrifuges, and belt drives
- Perform preventive maintenance tasks to minimize downtime and ensure optimal equipment performance
- Read and interpret electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and technical manuals
- Work closely with operations and maintenance teams to support plant production goals
- Ensure all work complies with MSHA, OSHA, NEC, and company safety standards
- Inspect electrical equipment for hazards, defects, or code violations
- Participate in safety meetings, audits, and training programs
- Maintain accurate records of maintenance and repair activities
- Respond to emergency troubleshooting needs during breakdowns or outages
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required
Minimum 3-5 years of industrial electrical experience, preferably in mining, coal preparation, or heavy industry
Strong working knowledge of:
480V and medium-voltage systems
Motor controls and power distribution
PLC troubleshooting. Programming is preferred
Ability to read electrical blueprints and schematics
Valid driver's license
Ability to pass MSHA-required training and physical exams
Preferred Qualifications
MSHA Part 48 certification
KY Electrician license or equivalent
Experience with variable frequency drives (VFDs)
Knowledge of conveyors and process plant automation
Welding or mechanical aptitude is a plus
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to work in a coal processing environment with exposure to dust, noise, heat, and outdoor conditions
- Ability to climb ladders, work at heights, and access confined spaces
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs
- Willingness to work extended hours, nights, weekends, and holidays as required
