Chesterfield County Fire & EMS is seeking a Fire Plans Review Coordinator who has or is willing to gain knowledge of the Virginia Construction Code and Virginia Statewide Fire Prevention Code. We are seeking a Fire Plans Review Coordinator with exceptional communication and teamwork skills. This is a unique opportunity to become a key member of our highly qualified, collaborative, and motivated fire and life safety team. The qualified candidate will be a front-line internal and external customer service point of contact for all employee's, citizen's, and future Chesterfield County businesses. They will assist contractors by providing knowledge, advice, and assistance through the plans review and fire protection inspection processes to ensure timely and seamless completion of ongoing projects within Chesterfield County. The Coordinator will promote and monitor Customer Service standards for the Plans Review Section. The incumbent must be a reliable, self-starter and able to mediate problems as they occur as well as manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment.
As a Fire Plans Review Coordinator your essential functions include the following:
Assign plans to the Plans Review staff for review per the direction of the Deputy Fire Marshal and based on staff workload. Primary point of contact for developers, property owners, contractors through the process of reviewing plans for the construction and/or renovation of all commercial, multi-residential and assembly buildings that contain fire safety systems. Schedule fire inspections and answers calls concerning the status of permit applications. Contact contractors to check on job status and estimated inspection times so that we can proactively manage our inspection schedules. Prepare, distribute, and analyze reports of outstanding permit applications that allows Plans Review Section to respond promptly from the time the application has been received to permit issuance, this allows the Plans Review Section to develop and implement programs to improve the level of customer service. Perform other work as required.
Heres what you need to apply:
Associates degree in fire protection engineering, drafting, construction management, computer science, business administration or a related field; two years of experience in paraprofessional engineering involving knowledge of field and/or office engineering activities with a basic knowledge of relevant building and fire safety codes and the ability to manage the coordination of inspections and plan reviews; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
These attributes will be beneficial:
Ability to interpret building code, mechanical code, fire protection standards applicable to fire protection systems, accessibility and other related codes; experience with interpreting architectural and engineering plans submittals and specifications, fire protection system design and acceptance testing of fire protection systems; knowledge of construction industry methods, materials, and equipment; experience with technical writing and project/office management.
The candidate must have:
Working knowledge of the basic principles and practices of engineering; of engineering report writing methods and record keeping practices. Ability to perform technical calculations; to analyze technical data; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to operate a personal computer and related software and other standard office equipment; to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external customers.
Current valid driver's license and good driving record required. Based on the Virginia DMV point system, records must not reflect a total of six or more demerit points within the twenty-four months preceding the anticipated hire date, or one major violation of six demerit points within the preceding thirty-six months OR a Department of Motor Vehicles DMV driving record point balance less than negative one. Out-of-state driving records must be obtained by applicant and submitted at the time of interview. Records must reflect at least three years of history and be dated within thirty days of interview.
Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justices "Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy" and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check. Must be a US citizen or have been a lawful resident of the US for the past ten consecutive years.
This position is considered Safety Sensitive and is subject to random drug and alcohol testing.

Well be honest - the strong candidate will possess the experience or the demonstrated intellect and ability to gain proficiency to understand the review of architectural plans and the required relevant building and fire code standards. It is vital that they maintain a positive and professional attitude while explaining minimum code provisions to customers. Be able to communicate with contractors to assist them with scheduling inspections and the management of the plan reviewers' schedules to meet needed timelines.
