Job Summary
*** Petroleum (Oxy) is seeking a safety-focused and detail-oriented Pipeline Locator to support pipeline integrity and damage prevention activities across our Odessa, Texas operations. This role is responsible for accurately locating and marking underground pipelines and utility assets to ensure safe excavation practices, protect critical infrastructure, and maintain regulatory compliance. The ideal candidate enjoys working outdoors, is committed to safety excellence, and can effectively interact with contractors, field personnel, and operations teams.
Key Responsibilities
Locate underground pipelines and related facilities using electromagnetic (EM) locating equipment, GPS technology, maps, and field observations.
Accurately mark the location of pipelines and underground assets using paint, flags, stakes, and other approved methods.
Read, interpret, and respond to One-Call (811) tickets in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
Review utility maps, blueprints, right-of-way documentation, and as-built drawings to identify asset locations.
Conduct field inspections of excavation, construction, and maintenance activities occurring near Oxy assets.
Provide safety oversight and guidance to contractors and third parties working around company pipelines and facilities.
Monitor excavation activities and ensure appropriate precautions are taken to prevent pipeline and utility strikes.
Complete daily job reports, safety checklists, compliance documentation, and locate records using mobile devices and computer systems.
Maintain accurate records of locate requests, completed locates, and damage prevention activities.
Participate in emergency response efforts related to pipeline incidents, utility conflicts, and excavation emergencies.
Work closely with Operations, Integrity Management, Environmental, Health & Safety (EH&S), and contractor personnel to support safe field operations.
Perform routine inspections of pipeline rights-of-way and report potential safety, environmental, or operational concerns.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent.
Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
Ability to safely operate company vehicles and travel throughout the assigned service area.
Basic computer skills and experience using mobile devices, tablets, or electronic reporting systems.
Ability to read maps, drawings, and technical documents.
Strong communication and problem-solving skills.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
Preferred Qualifications
Previous experience in utility locating, pipeline operations, oil and gas field operations, construction, damage prevention, or a related field.
Experience using electromagnetic (EM) locating equipment and GPS mapping tools.
Working knowledge of underground utility and pipeline systems.
Familiarity with One-Call/811 requirements and excavation safety practices.
