Position Summary/Objective 

The Pipe Welder will work under the supervision of the Foreman. They will perform welding activities in accordance with VDOT welding standards and support operational activities when required by the crew. 

The Hampton Roads Connector Partners JV (HRCP) consisting of Dragados, VINCI, and Flatiron has been selected to construct the $4.2 BN Design Build project –the largest civil construction contract ever awarded by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). 

The project scope across a 9-mile section of the I-64 will include: a new 3.5-mile bridge-tunnel crossing that will accommodate a total of 8 lanes of capacity across the water, replacement of the existing marine approach bridges and the addition of a third lane on I-64 in each direction. The twin 45’ diameter 1.5-mile tunnels will be bored by TBM, creating the second largest TBM tunnel opening for a TBM in North America. The project is expected to continue to the end of 2025. 

Principal/Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

• Preparing Materials: Cutting, grinding, and cleaning metal surfaces to ensure proper welding and a strong weld. 

• Operating Welding Equipment: Using welding machines, torches, and other tools to perform welds accurately and efficiently. 

• Quality Control: Inspecting welds for defects and ensuring they meet required standards. 

• Maintaining Equipment: Keeping welding equipment and tools in good working order. 

• Following Safety Procedures: Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhering to safety protocols. 

• Joining Metal Pieces: Using various welding techniques (e.g., stick welding, MIG, TIG) to fuse metal parts together. 
• Reading Blueprints: Interpreting technical drawings and specifications to determine how to weld and assemble metal structures. 

• Keep site clean and organized, controls quality and tools needed for own work.

Qualifications  

Required 

Preferred 

• Must be certified by American Welding Society (AWS) or similar group. 

• 1-2 years’ experience in heavy civil construction projects preferred. 

• Must be 18 years of age or older. 

• Must pass the drug screen. 

• Ability to read and understand a heavy construction plan. 

• Ability to operate equipment. 

• Ability to work overtime and flexible hours (day/night) 

• Ability to work outdoors with exposure to all weather conditions. 

• Knowledge and working experience of DOT standards and regulations. 

• Ability to communicate with others to convey information effectively. 

• Must be able to perform physical activities that require considerable use of your arms, legs and moving your whole body, such as climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. 

• Demonstrate your attention to details. 

• Knowledgeable of safety procedures and practices 

• Must be able to lift to 50 lbs. 

• Minimum 3 years of welding experience preferred. 

• Previous experience with and understanding of the pile driving process and heavy equipment preferred. 

• A valid driver’s License preferred. 

• High School Diploma preferred

• Exposure to extreme temperatures as well as high levels of noise and varying levels of dust 

• Working on uneven and potentially hazardous terrain, including working at heights, underground, or near water bodies depending on the bridge/ tunnel location 

• Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as hard hats, safety glasses, and reflective vests when on-site 

Physical Demands 

• Walking long distances within the site to inspect various aspects of the project. 

• Must be able to lift 50lb or more
