The Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA) is primarily responsible for the delivery of Physical Therapy care to the patient population to which she/he is assigned and the recording of that care in the hospital medical record. The PTA acts as a consultant to various patient populations. The PTA must work under the direction and supervision of a licensed Physical Therapist according to the laws and practice regulations of the State of Virginia. The Physical Therapist Assistant provides instruction to OT/PT support staff, PT students, personnel of other disciplines within VCUHS, and patient and/or family members. The PTA may rotate through our various clinical service areas.

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire: Licensed (or licensure eligible) by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist Assistant

Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment: Current license by the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Physical Therapist Assistant Current CPR Certification if required by clinic or practice area

Experience REQUIRED: Minimum of 1 year of work experience as a Physical Therapist Assistant

Experience PREFERRED: N/A

Education/training REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited Physical Therapist Assistant Program (Associates Degree)

Education/training PREFERRED: N/A

Independent action(s) required: • Patient implementation of plan of care, discharge planning. • Ordering equipment. • Representing department at rounds and discharge conferences. • Scheduling and charging patients.

Supervisory responsibilities (if applicable): • Employee may have supervisory responsibilities of Rehab Technicians, students, and volunteers. • Employee is a member of a self-directed team and applies his knowledge and experience in daily clinic problem solving. • The team will bring unresolved issues to departmental manager for assistance and guidance in their resolution.

Additional position requirements: • Employee is expected to share in weekend and holiday schedule expectations of the department or have a fluctuation of daily work hours from 8 AM to 7 PM based on patient population/clinic needs.
