About The Position:

A Phlebotomist Technician II schedules, assigns and reviews the work of a group of Phlebotomy Technicians I engaged in the performance of venipuncture and skin puncture to obtain blood specimens for diagnostic testing in a medical or clinical laboratory.

Essential Job Functions

What Youll Be Doing:

  • Assigns Phlebotomy Technicians I to inpatient ward or outpatient clinic areas on basis of actual workload, the number of employees available, their qualifications, the extent of their training in the procedures involved, and similar factors.
  • Plans and schedules assignment of Phlebotomy Technicians I to hospital wards for the collection of blood specimens from patients using venipuncture and skin puncture techniques; revises schedules as necessary to meet changing needs.
  • Observes technicians performance of venipuncture and skin puncture both in training and on the job; makes necessary corrections to assure maintenance of established laboratory and patient care standards and Quality Assurance/Assessment activities with section.

Requirements

REQUIREMENTS TO QUALIFY:

Six months of experience at the level of the Los Angeles County class of Phlebotomy Technician I*.

No out-of-class experience will be accepted.

License(s) and Certificate(s):

A valid certificate to practice as a Certified Phlebotomy Technician I or II issued by the California State Department of Public Health, Laboratory Field Services (CA PH-LFS) Phlebotomy Program.

A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

Withhold Information: No withhold will be allowed for this examination. Required certification must be fully met at the time of filing and clearly indicated on the application.

PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light:

This class includes administrative and clerical positions requiring light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10-pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable ambulation may be involved.

Desirable Qualification:

Additional credit will be given to applicants who possess the following desirable qualifications in excess of the requirement:

  • Additional time of experience at the level of Phlebotomy Technician I*.
  • Current certificate of completion in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) issued by the American Heart Association -OR- A Basic Life Support (BLS) certificate issued by the American Heart Association.

  • Phlebotomy Technician I in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: Performs venipuncture and skin puncture to obtain blood specimens from patients for diagnostic testing in a medical or clinical laboratory.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:

This assessment type will evaluate training and experience you list on the online application and supplemental questionnaire and assign a score based on a standardized scoring system. This part of the assessment is worth 100% of your total score and assesses: Requirements, Desirable Qualifications, and Supplemental Questionnaire.

Achieving a passing score of 70% or higher on the assessment is needed to be added to the list.

ELIGIBILITY AND VACANCY INFORMATION:

Applicants who passed the assessment are placed on a list in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the list accordingly. We will use this list to fill vacancies in the DHS as they occur.

No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.
