Phlebotomist (PRN)

Hours: 08:00am to 4:30pm (PRN)

JOB SUMMARY                                                                                                                                                                

Performs clinical lab procedures, quality assurance, and instrument maintenance. Obtains blood specimens and collects non-blood specimens such as urine, sputum, and throat swabs for laboratory testing.

SUMMARY OF ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                                         

• Checks the test requisition or computer orders for correctness and completeness prior to collecting samples. Corrects or brings discrepancies to the attention of the lab director.
• Greets each patient in a friendly, professional manner.
• Verifies positive patient identification using at least 2 patient identifiers prior to collecting specimen.
• Performs venipunctures and finger/heel sticks using aseptic technique and in accordance with department procedures.
• Exhibits concern for the patient’s comfort and safety.
• Explains procedures/process before obtaining specimens.
• Ensures that specimen requirements are met at the time of collection and maintains specimen integrity. Adheres to lab policies for rejection of unacceptable specimens.
• Coordinates the collections of therapeutic drug-monitoring assays with nursing personnel to ensure the proper drug dose to collection time.
• Coordinates special lab studies with ambulatory services and pharmacy. Administers oral test solutions.
• Initials, dates and times all collections.
• Offers additional assistance-seeks to ensure patient satisfaction before concluding encounter.
• Registers patients in to the computer system, labels specimens, and collects and receives specimens into the lab computer.
• Answers phone calls – records request for blood collection, answers general questions concerning test orders and collection, takes messages and routes calls.

BASIC SKILLS                                                                                                                                                                     

• Basic computer knowledge and ability to touch type.
• Ability to discern color.
• Experience with lab information systems or the willingness to learn.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIRED                                                                                              

• Education in all age groups ranging from newborn to the geriatric population obtained either in school education or subsequent training.
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Phlebotomy certification preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS                                                                                                                                                          

• Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Additional languages a plus.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS                                                                                                                                          

• Ability to spend long periods of time on feet.
• Must be able to lift 50 pounds
