    The Phlebotomist/Office Associate collects blood specimens from patients and performs other lab duties under the guidance of the medical technologists.

    Responsibilities of this position include: 

    • Collects specimens from patients of all ages using various collection devices. Performs venipuncture.
    • Monitors orders and collection lists ensuring timely collection.
    • Interprets and evaluates orders prior to collection for accuracy of test selection and timing.
    • Performs laboratory testing covered by CLIA, including waived testing procedures, culture set up, and assists with specimen processing. Prepares specimens for transport, and complies with all quality measures.
    • Obtains, reviews, and summarizes patient clinical information to ensure providers have accurate and timely data for care planning.
    • Follows proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) usage including donning and doffing.
    • Answers telephone calls, screens calls, takes and delivers messages within EHR according to department practices.
    • Assists with appointment scheduling including office visits, referrals, diagnostic testing, therapy appointments, and surgery. Collaborates with the pre-authorization department and insurance companies to initiate referrals and obtain approvals, pre-certifications, and prior authorizations for medical care and treatment.
    • Communicates normal test results to patients as directed by the provider, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and adherence to established protocols.
    • Organizes, restocks, and cleans outpatient drawing area and all carts, trays, and hand helds. Keeps all patient care areas cleaned and stocked with appropriate levels of medical supplies to enhance patient care and efficiency. Appropriately maintains, cleans, decontaminates, and sterilizes patient care equipment and initiates requests for repairs (or replacements) as necessary.
    • Monitors and maintains lab refrigerator temperatures.
    • Orders lab supplies and other supplies as requested.
    • Conducts proper biohazard waste disposal and follows components of the Bloodborne Pathogen Exposure Control Plan. Follows the Fort HealthCare decontamination and sterilization policy as appropriate to the specific clinic and equipment needs.

    Requirements of this position include:

    • High School Diploma or GED
    • Ability to communicate professionally & appropriately with care team, patients, and family members
    • Adaptable to change
    • Ability to cope with stress and criticism
    • BLS and ASCP Certifications preferred
