Overview
The Phlebotom /EKG Technician provides direct and indirect inpatient and outpatient care services including phlebotomy, ECG testing and transportation of patients.
Responsibilities
- Verifies patient identification by using two patient identifiers: Name, DOB or Medical Record Number.
- Never identifies patient by room number.
- Labels all specimens in front of patient with required information, EMR ID, date and time of collection.
- Blood is drawn according to established hospital procedures in a safe manner with minimum trauma to the patient.
- Monitors for adverse effects of blood draws.
- Compliant with all safety standards and utilizes Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all specimens are collected correctly.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate healthcare provider and notifying fellow staff and/or management of unresolved orders.
- Maintains annual required competency training and provides necessary support to maintain proper equipment function.
- Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen and policy requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all specimens and exams are collected correctly.
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate healthcare provider and notifying fellow staff and/or management of unresolved orders.
Adhering to Proper Procedures
- Adheres to the proper procedure for obtaining, charging for, and returning supplies/equipment.
- Maintains adequate supply levels through the use of accurate inventory control.
Transportation and IT Applications
- Provides efficient transportation for patients both to and from requesting service areas.
- Utilizes selected healthcare IT applications proficiently as assigned by management.
Other Duties
- Performs other duties as assigned by management within job scope.
Qualifications
Education/Training
- High School Diploma or equivalent is required.
Experience
- 1-year Cardiovascular or Phlebotomy experience.
- EEG experience preferred.

Post-Employment Requirements
- BLS, provided by the American Heart Association (AHA), required within 30 days of hire.
