Overview

The Phlebotom /EKG Technician provides direct and indirect inpatient and outpatient care services including phlebotomy, ECG testing and transportation of patients.

Responsibilities

  • Verifies patient identification by using two patient identifiers: Name, DOB or Medical Record Number.
  • Never identifies patient by room number.
  • Labels all specimens in front of patient with required information, EMR ID, date and time of collection.
  • Blood is drawn according to established hospital procedures in a safe manner with minimum trauma to the patient.
  • Monitors for adverse effects of blood draws.
  • Compliant with all safety standards and utilizes Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all specimens are collected correctly.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate healthcare provider and notifying fellow staff and/or management of unresolved orders.
  • Maintains annual required competency training and provides necessary support to maintain proper equipment function.
  • Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen and policy requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all specimens and exams are collected correctly.
  • Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate healthcare provider and notifying fellow staff and/or management of unresolved orders.

Adhering to Proper Procedures

  • Adheres to the proper procedure for obtaining, charging for, and returning supplies/equipment.
  • Maintains adequate supply levels through the use of accurate inventory control.

Transportation and IT Applications

  • Provides efficient transportation for patients both to and from requesting service areas.
  • Utilizes selected healthcare IT applications proficiently as assigned by management.

Other Duties

  • Performs other duties as assigned by management within job scope.

Qualifications

Education/Training

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required.

Experience

  • 1-year Cardiovascular or Phlebotomy experience.
  • EEG experience preferred.

Additional Information

Post-Employment Requirements

  • BLS, provided by the American Heart Association (AHA), required within 30 days of hire.
