    Pharmacy Operations Lead Technician

    Join a leadership-focused pharmacy technician role that combines operational oversight, automation management, medication safety, quality improvement, and staff development. This position serves as a key resource for pharmacy leadership, helping ensure efficient workflows, regulatory compliance, and exceptional service across the department.

    Key Responsibilities:

    Automation & Technology Oversight

    • Manage Pyxis user access requests and maintain accurate documentation.
    • Coordinate Pyxis formulary additions with pharmacy purchasing teams.
    • Lead monthly Pyxis data collection, analysis, and process improvement initiatives.
    • Serve as the primary point of contact for Pyxis automation support, maintenance, and troubleshooting.
    • Oversee pharmacy packaging equipment operations, vendor communication, and repair coordination.

    Controlled Substance Management

    • Monitor daily controlled substance discrepancy reports.
    • Investigate and assist with resolving discrepancies within established timelines.
    • Support compliance with regulatory and organizational controlled substance policies.

    Medication Management & Compliance

    • Ensure completion of medication storage area inspections and follow up on deficiencies.
    • Monitor medication kits, crash carts, and emergency boxes to ensure proper stocking and expiration date compliance.
    • Generate and review compliance reports to identify trends and improvement opportunities.

    Refrigerator & Environmental Monitoring

    • Oversee refrigerator monitoring systems and sensor validation.
    • Review alerts, alarms, and escalated concerns, ensuring timely resolution.
    • Analyze monthly monitoring data and identify opportunities to improve medication storage compliance.

    Project & System Implementation Support

    • Participate in pharmacy system rollouts and implementation projects.
    • Coordinate assigned tasks, timelines, and operational readiness activities.
    • Partner with pharmacy leadership to support department-wide initiatives and workflow improvements.

    Staffing & Team Support

    • Provide first-shift technician coverage during staffing shortages.
    • Assist with scheduling and operational coverage needs to maintain continuity of care.

    Training & Staff Development

    • Serve as the primary trainer and mentor for newly hired pharmacy technicians.
    • Lead onboarding activities using technician orientation and competency checklists.
    • Meet regularly with new team members to assess progress and provide coaching.
    • Validate competencies and complete training sign-offs before technicians begin independent staffing.

    Ideal Candidate

    • Certified Pharmacy Technician with strong operational and leadership skills.
    • Experience with pharmacy automation systems, medication management processes, and regulatory compliance.
    • Demonstrated ability to analyze data, solve problems, drive process improvements, and train others.
    • Strong communication, organizational, and project management skills with a passion for supporting team success and operational excellence.

    Job Summary:

    Under the direct supervision of a pharmacist and in accordance with standard procedures, this position leads workflows and drives process improvements within a specialized operational area, specific to a single ministry. At least 80% of work time is dedicated to this specialized function, which may include areas such as technology and automation, controlled substance management, transitions of care, or purchasing. The role involves performing advanced pharmacy technician duties that require specialized knowledge and skills beyond those typically expected in standard technician roles.

    Job Responsibilities and Requirements:

    PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Performs daily services and functions of the specialized role within assigned ministry. Solves issues in the specialized area as they arise. Ensures documents and records are accurate and completed in a timely manner. 
    • Serves as a resource in the specialized area for other ministry team members. Solves complex problems and ensures that issues are escalated and closed as needed. 
    • Complies with legal, regulatory, and accreditation standards. Collaborates with department leadership to adopt best practices. Coaches team members when practice standards are not upheld. 
    • Conducts reviews and audits of specialized area. Reports and monitors KPIs to ensure optimal performance. Identifies quality improvement opportunities based on specialized skill set to ensure safe, effective, and efficient services and patient care. Provides input to and leads implementation of operational changes and advancements in accordance with system standardization. Participates in ministry work teams, committees, and councils. 
    • Collaborates with department leaders to develop and coordinate team member education, training, orientation, and competency. Trains other team members in specialized area. 
    • Serves as the ministry liaison to regional pharmacy teams in specialty area. Collaborates with leadership to communicate changes in specialty area. 
    • Provides excellent customer service to patients, other staff and ancillary departments and maintains high standards of confidentiality in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). 
    • Works in a constant state of alertness and safe manner. 
    • Performs other duties as assigned.  

    EDUCATION

    • High School Diploma/GED or education equivalency for licensing.  


    EXPERIENCE

    • Three years’ experience as a pharmacy technician 

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Frequent lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 0-25 lbs.
    • Frequent sitting, standing, walking, reaching and repetitive foot/leg and hand/arm movements.
    • Frequent use of vision and depth perception for distances near (20 inches or less) and far (20 feet or more) and to identify and distinguish colors.
    • Frequent use of hearing and speech to share information through oral communication. Ability to hear alarms, malfunctioning machinery, etc.
    • Frequent keyboard use/data entry.
    • Occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, squatting, twisting and gripping.
    • Occasional lifting/carrying and pushing/pulling objects weighing 25-50 lbs.
    • Rare climbing.
