Pharmacy Technician – Hospital
Pay: $24-$26/hour
Schedule: 8:00 PM – 7:00 AM
Shift: 7 shifts on / 7 shifts off
Schedule Details: Thursday start; work 7 consecutive nights, followed by 7 days off

Job Summary
The Pharmacy Technician supports hospital pharmacy operations by accurately preparing and distributing medications, maintaining inventory, assisting with sterile preparations, and operating automated dispensing systems. This position requires previous hospital pharmacy experience and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.

Responsibilities

Filling Orders

• Accurately and promptly fill medication orders for pharmacist verification and dispensing.
• Prepare extemporaneous medications accurately.
• Stock pharmacy areas and replenish carts, trays, boxes, and medication kits.
• Perform cart/bin exchanges, including transferring bulk medications and returning unused or discontinued IVs/medications.
• Check expiration dates on multi-dose medications and replace medications and supplies as needed.
• Document and sign required paperwork and identify patient-profile issues for pharmacist follow-up.

Distribution & Returns

• Handle requests received by phone, pharmacy window, fax, and computer professionally and promptly.
• Distribute orders to the appropriate pharmacist when necessary.
• Deliver medications throughout the hospital using pneumatic tubes, hand delivery, and courier services.
• Retrieve and sort medication returns from nursing stations.

Sterile Preparations

• Prepare IV medications using proper aseptic technique.
• Review, batch, and document required information for IV medications.
• Monitor IV medication levels and ensure completed batches are checked and stored promptly.
• Check IV rates and status and assist with treatment coordination and clearances.
• Demonstrate knowledge of IV equipment, sterile technique, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and safe handling of hazardous drugs.
• Complete required documentation and labeling accurately.

Automated Dispensing Machines

• Accurately and promptly stock automated dispensing machines.
• Fill stock-outs, troubleshoot failed drawers, and deliver discrepancy reports.
• Remove expired medications and document destruction.
• Review daily comparison reports and process reconciliation sheets in the CII safe.
• Troubleshoot equipment issues, escalate problems when necessary, and follow up on resolutions.
• Perform monthly inspections of designated automated dispensing machines.

Repackaging & Inventory Control

• Accurately repackage oral medications and ensure products are properly bar-coded.
• Apply ancillary labels when required.
• Check medication expiration dates and remove outdated products.
• Retrieve recalled medications from stock locations.
• Obtain and restock medications and supplies as needed.
• Maintain organized inventory and properly document all applicable processes.

Teamwork & Customer Service

• Support departmental goals by assisting coworkers and remaining flexible with roles and responsibilities.
• Follow departmental coverage guidelines.
• Answer phones, pharmacy window, and door requests promptly and courteously.
• Address problems and issues independently when appropriate.
• Work collaboratively with pharmacists to maintain efficient workflow.
• Provide professional and helpful service to patients, coworkers, and allied health professionals.
• Participate in departmental, system, performance improvement, and cost-saving initiatives.
