Job Description

This Pharmacy Technician role supports multiple pharmacy operations areas, including formulary management, pharmacy audit and recovery, pharmacy service center, Medicare Part D and Part B, appeals, state health programs pharmacy operations, prior authorization, and oversight and audit support. Using established guidelines, the Pharmacy Technician reviews and processes requests from physicians, medical groups, pharmacies, and members for prescription drugs and pharmacy benefits, researches and resolves issues, and collaborates with clinical pharmacists and other healthcare professionals to ensure accurate, compliant, and timely pharmacy benefit administration.

Responsibilities

  • Review and process formulary change requests from health plans in accordance with established guidelines.
  • Submit and maintain formulary change requests with the pharmacy claims processor and ensure accurate updates.
  • Generate, maintain, and review formulary status grids to ensure accuracy and contract compliance.
  • Use reports to perform audits and quality checks on current formulary status and identify discrepancies.
  • Assist clinical pharmacists with formulary database maintenance and updates to the company website.
  • Perform a variety of assignments related to pharmacy audit and recovery functions.
  • Review paid claims for quantity and billing discrepancies and communicate findings to pharmacies.
  • Fax inquiries to pharmacies related to audit findings and respond to incoming faxed correspondence.
  • Answer incoming calls from pharmacies and respond appropriately to questions and issues.
  • Update an Access database with information from incoming phone calls, faxes, and emails.
  • Take member inquiry calls related to pharmacy benefits, including prior authorization requests.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • At least 1 year of experience as a Pharmacy Technician.
  • Pharmacy data entry experience, including processing claims and prior authorizations.
  • Experience reviewing and processing prescription drug and pharmacy benefit requests.
  • Ability to research and resolve pharmacy-related questions, problems, and issues using reference materials.
  • Strong attention to detail when reviewing claims, formulary status, and prior authorization documentation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills for interacting with members, providers, pharmacies, and internal teams.
  • Ability to handle high volumes of phone calls and inquiries in a professional and efficient manner.
  • Proficiency in using computer systems, databases, and claims processing platforms.
  • Ability to interpret and apply pharmacy and medical benefit policies and criteria.
  • Organizational skills to manage multiple tasks, reports, and audits simultaneously.
  • Customer service skills, with the ability to educate members and respond to provider and pharmacy inquiries.
  • Valid Pharmacy Technician license (preferred).

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Customer service or retail experience is preferred.
  • Experience with prior authorization processes and criteria is highly beneficial.
  • Experience handling pharmacy appeals and understanding appeal workflows.

Work Environment

The Pharmacy Technician works in a structured, office-based or pharmacy operations environment that focuses on accurate and compliant administration of pharmacy benefits. The role involves extensive use of computer systems, claims processing platforms, and databases, including tools such as Access for tracking communications and PBM systems for documenting coverage determinations and prior authorizations. The position is highly phone- and computer-intensive, requiring frequent interaction with members, providers, pharmacies, internal departments, and external partners. Work is guided by established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements, with regular participation in audits, quality checks, and process improvements. The environment emphasizes accuracy, timeliness, and adherence to standards while supporting collaboration across multiple pharmacy operations functions, including formulary management, prior authorization, appeals, Medicare Part D and Part B operations, and state health programs.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Birmingham, AL.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $24.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
