Job Summary and Qualifications
Assumes responsibility and accountability for communication process of the hospital to include handling various codes and other emergent type occurrences. Provides compassionate and competent service for all patients, visitors, physicians, and employees, considering individual needs related to growth, development, sensitivity to pain, and ability to effectively communicate. Responsible for other related departmental assignments as requested by the Director of Inpatient Services and/or other hospital administrative personnel as appointed.
What you will do in this role:
- Displays sensitivity to the needs of the patients and other co-workers.
- Places the well-being of the patient as his/her first priority.
- Demonstrates responsiveness to physicians, families, co-workers and visitors in a timely manner.
- Demonstrates a willingness and thoroughness to provide service to all customers (physicians, patients, families, co-workers and visitors).
- Demonstrates good organizational skills in coordinating services to all customers physicians, patients, families, co-workers and visitors.
- Demonstrates responsiveness to physicians, patients, families, co-workers and visitors in a timely manner.
- Necessitates coordination of hand-eye and manual dexterity sufficient to competently operate a keyboard, telephone and two-way radio dispatch.
- Ability to handle various codes and other emergent type occurrences in a controlled and professional manner.
- Refers to the hospital directory to ascertain station numbers of persons called and manipulates associated keys to relay calls appropriately using proper words and phrases 100% of the time (see 5a below)
- Responsible for handling hospital-wide telephone communications in an efficient and courteous manner.
- Uses proper words and phrases 100% of the time when communicating via telephone to include:
- When answering the phone –“Thank you for calling Texas Orthopedic Hospital, this is ___, how may I help you?”
- When transferring a call – “Please hold and I will transfer you to___.”
- Always ask permission prior to placing someone on hold.
- Always thank the caller.
- Always ask “May I help you” and introduce yourself by name and the name of the hospital.
- Always speak in a pleasant tone, try to smile while speaking.
- Patients will be informed that you will notify the nurse immediately of their request.
- Responsible for utilization of the public address system as duty requires.
- Presents professionalism and clarity of speech.
- Answers questions of callers promptly and professionally. If the answer is unknown, ask if you may place the caller on hold and obtain the answer immediately.
