Job Overview - Payroll Specialist - 34453
The Payroll Specialist is responsible for the accurate, timely, and compliant processing of employee payroll. This role manages day-to-day payroll activities, including reviewing employee time and attendance, calculating wages and deductions, processing taxes and benefits, maintaining payroll records, and resolving payroll-related questions.
The ideal Payroll Specialist is highly detail-oriented, comfortable working with confidential employee information, and knowledgeable about federal, state, and local payroll requirements. Experience with payroll systems such as ADP or Paychex and strong Microsoft Excel skills are highly valued.
In this role, you will:
- Process payroll accurately and on schedule for all employees.
- Review employee timecards, hours worked, earnings, deductions, and other payroll inputs before each payroll cycle.
- Calculate and process payroll taxes, benefits, garnishments, deductions, and other withholdings.
- Ensure payroll practices comply with applicable federal, state, and local wage and tax regulations.
- Maintain accurate employee payroll and compensation records.
- Research and resolve payroll discrepancies, including issues involving pay, deductions, timekeeping, and benefits.
- Respond to employee questions regarding paychecks, payroll deductions, taxes, and other compensation-related matters.
- Prepare payroll reports and documentation for management and other internal stakeholders.
- Assist with payroll audits and provide supporting documentation as needed.
- Maintain the confidentiality and security of employee compensation and payroll information.
- Stay informed about changes to payroll regulations and requirements that may affect payroll processing.
Successful candidates will have:
- Previous experience processing payroll or working in a payroll, accounting, human resources, or related role.
- Working knowledge of payroll processes, payroll taxes, employee deductions, and wage regulations.
- Experience using payroll software such as ADP, Paychex, UKG, Paylocity, or similar systems.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, including the ability to organize, review, and reconcile payroll data.
- Strong attention to detail and a high degree of accuracy.
- Ability to identify, investigate, and resolve payroll discrepancies.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, particularly when working against payroll deadlines.
- Ability to handle confidential employee and compensation information with discretion.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
