We are accepting applications for Patrol Officer positions within our uniformed patrol division. This recruitment is open to individuals with no prior law enforcement experience who are interested in beginning a meaningful career in policing.

These Patrol Officer positions are part of Field Operations and involve duties such as preventative patrol, traffic enforcement, responding to emergency and non-emergency calls, and handling criminal investigations. The department is a comprehensive, 24-hour police agency that embraces community-oriented policing and neighborhood problem-solving. Specialized roles within the department include, but are not limited to, the K9 unit, drone program, bike patrol (including eBikes), firearms instructor, evidence technician, detective, emergency vehicle operations instructor, defense and arrest tactics instructor, field training officer, community service officer, and school resource officer.

For applicants with prior experience, our competitive salary and benefits package includes flexibility for the Chief to assign a starting step based on the officers prior experience: one (1) year, three (3) years, five (5) years, or seven (7) years of seniority. Qualified lateral transfers may also receive up to two weeks of sick leave, depending on their years of experience.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

Preventative patrol, traffic enforcement, emergency and non-emergency calls for service, and investigations containing criminal matters.

Qualifications

Qualifications to Apply: Must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years of age, and a high school graduate or equivalent. Applicants must hold a valid Wisconsin driver's license, have binocular vision correctable to 20/20, and have no color blindness. Candidates should have no criminal history that is significantly related to the duties of a police officer and must be in good physical and mental health, with a weight that is reasonably proportionate to height. A minimum of 20 fully accredited college credits is required in order to be considered. Additionally, candidates must complete 60 fully accredited college credits within five years of hire. Applicants should also possess the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform essential law enforcement duties, operate standard police equipment, execute police use-of-force techniques, and communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Additional Information

The selection process includes, but is not limited to; assessment day, strength and agility test, medical examination, character background investigation, psychological examination and drug testing. A probationary period of 18 months is required.

IMPORTANT DATES TO NOTE:

Assessment Day: October 23, 2026*

  • Top candidates will be invited to complete Assessment Day, which will be held on Friday, October 23, 2026. Assessments for each candidate are two hours and start times will be scheduled individually with each candidate. Candidates must successfully complete Assessment Day to advance.

Police and Fire Commission (PFC) Interviews: Thursday, October 29, 2026

Interviews will be in the evening and will be scheduled individually with each candidate.

Candidates must successfully complete this interview and be certified by the PFC to advance.

Anticipated Hire Date: January 4, 2027

This anticipated start date is for candidates who have not yet been certified. One week of orientation training would begin prior to a paid sponsorship for the Police Academy, which begins January 11, 2027.

NOTE: Candidates who are already certified law enforcement officers may begin employment prior to January 4, 2027. Lateral transfers can begin a career with Verona PD at salaries equivalent to 1, 3, 5, and 7 years of experience, plus educational incentives. Officers hired as a lateral transfer are entitled to prorated vacation and sick leave upon hire.

INSURANCES:

Health Insurance: The City of Verona participates in the Wisconsin Group Health Insurance Plan. Employees can choose from a variety of health care providers (Dean, Quartz-UW, GHC) that offer the same great uniform benefit package. Each package is highlighted by a zero deductible plan with affordable premiums!

Dental Insurance: Employer pays entire cost of Delta Dental group dental insurance plan.

Life Insurance: Employer pays cost of basic Wisconsin Group Life Insurance Plan which is equal to your annual earnings.

Long Term Disability Insurance: Wisconsin Income Continuation Program. Currently no premium.

SICK LEAVE: Earned at 1 day (8hrs) per month. Accrual maximum of 1160 hours (145 working days).

VACATION:

  • Six (6) full months through completion of one (1) year: 48 hours
  • First day of second year through completion of fifth year: 96 hours
  • First day of sixth year through completion of ninth year: 144 hours
  • First day of tenth year through completion of fourteenth year: 192 hours
  • First day of fifteenth year and over: 240 hours

PAID HOLIDAYS: 12 days

EDUCATION INCENTIVE:

  • Ninety-six (96) credits or more earned at an accredited institute of higher learning for which such credits shall be accepted toward a college degree, shall cause the employee to receive incentive pay on their base rate at six percent (6%).
  • Upon receiving a BA/BS degree, the employee will receive incentive pay on their base rate at eight percent (8%).
  • Upon receiving a graduate degree, the employee will receive incentive pay on their base rate at ten percent (10%).

PENSION: City and Employee each pay contributions for participation in Wisconsin Retirement System. The 2026 rate is 21.9% of gross pay. The City pays 14.7% and the employee pays 7.2%.

OTHER: Employees are offered participation in the following at their own expense.
