    Job Description:

    Patient Safety Assistant

    To provide patient and family care as part of the health care team in accordance with the mission, vision, and policies and procedures of Bay Area Hospital. Monitors and adjusts environment to maintain safety in the environment of care. At the direction of the RN, may assist to feed the patient and assist in activities of daily living. The safety assistant is for the added safety of the patient who demonstrates behavior detrimental towards self or others.

    POSITION SUMMARY

    To provide patient and family care as part of the health care team in accordance with the mission, vision, and policies and procedures of Bay Area Hospital. Monitors and adjusts environment to maintain safety in the environment of care. At the direction of the RN, may assist to feed the patient and assist in activities of daily living. The safety assistant is for the added safety of the patient who demonstrates behavior detrimental towards self or others.

    PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Maintains patient safety from self and environment
    • Assists the patient with meals and feeding; activities of daily living
    • Assists patient up when necessary and as per instructions from an Registered Nurse
    • Maintain effective communication
    • Reports observations and safety measures utilized to Registered Nurse
    • Gives clear simple directions to patient, reinforces teaching and orientation to the patient
    • Follows direction from the Registered Nurse about safety for the patient and the environment of care
    • Maintain and enforce strict patient confidentiality and respect patient and family rights
    • Performs other duties as assigned

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES

    • Maintains regular, consistent and punctual attendance at the assigned job location
    • Recognizes and reports abnormal occurrences
    • Knows the fire plan and escape routes for patient and self

    Demonstrates competence by ongoing completion of any or all of the following:

    • Proficiency testing
    • Skill demonstration
    • Practice of core standards for service excellence
    • Provides patient care and performs tasks using job skills, growth, and development knowledge

    EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSES/DEGREES

    • American Heart Association Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support (BLS)
    • SAFE class or organization approved workplace violence training or obtain within 6 months of hire which must be obtained by the last day of the month after the 6 month grace period
    • High School Diploma or Equivalent preferred

    EXPERIENCE

    • Effective communication skills both verbally and written
