Join a fast-paced, highly collaborative team at UPMC Mercy as a Patient Care Technician (PCT Specialist supporting Same Day Surgery and the Mercy Pavilion surgical area. In this vital role, you'll be at the heart of the patient experience-assisting with check-ins, obtaining vital signs and EKGs, supporting room turnover, transporting patients, stocking supplies, and working closely with nursing and waiting room staff to keep operations running smoothly. Responsibilities:

  • Provide safe, compassionate patient care while demonstrating respect for cultural diversity and maintaining a professional, team-oriented environment.

  • Support daily unit operations, including answering call lights/phones, transporting patients, stocking supplies, and assisting with meal trays.

  • Perform core PCT duties: ADLs (bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, repositioning, vital signs, weights, intake/output, point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose, and telemetry support.

  • Complete clinical tasks such as specimen collection, simple dressings, bladder scans, restraint application/removal, and HAC/PSI prevention.

  • Perform advanced skills including IV insertion/removal, Foley/straight catheterization, phlebotomy, and transport coordination ("ticket to ride" once competencies are achieved.

  • Maintain proficiency in at least one advanced skill based on department needs (e.g., 12-lead EKGs, basic arrhythmia recognition, complex wound care, NG tube management.

  • Educate patients and families under RN direction and assist with care planning/prioritization.

  • Document accurately in the medical record and support quality initiatives and departmental projects.

  • Transport monitored patients and assist with basic clerical tasks as needed.

  • Follow protocols when handling or transporting medications as part of patient transport duties.

  • High school diploma or GED required

  • Must meet one of the following:

  • 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet Patient Care Technician - Senior requirements

  • 1 year of healthcare experience and enrollment in a PT/OT/PA program with at least one completed clinical rotation

  • 1 year of healthcare experience and a completed bachelor's degree in a health sciences field

  • Successful completion of:

  • UPMC Patient Care Technician Specialist class

  • eRecord training

  • Annual completion of a professional contribution (to be determined after hire

  • Nursing students with at least one completed clinical rotation preferred

  • EMT, Paramedic, or current enrollment in an EMT/Paramedic program preferred

  • May be required to complete UPMC cardiac rhythm course based on unit needs

Licensure, Certifications & Clearances:

  • Basic Life Support (BLS or CPR certification (AHA required within 30 days of hire
  • ACLS preferred
  • Act 34 clearance required
