Position: Patient Care Assistant (PCA)

Reports to: Supervising PCA

Classification: Part time, non-exempt (hourly): estimated 16-20 hours per week

Compensation Range: $21-$25 per hour (bilingual candidates will receive a pay differential)

Location: Chicago, Illinois

Schedule

This role is expected to be scheduled on Tuesdays & Wednesdays for a range of 16-20 hours per week. Additional hours may be available on an ad-hoc basis.

Job Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Supervising PCA and licensed medical staff, the role of the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) will be to provide patient-centered, trauma-informed medical care to patients and be responsible for maintaining the key clinical areas in the building. All employees are expected to uphold and promote Hope Clinic's mission statement, code of ethics, patient care standards and policies.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with medically accurate and efficient execution of all patient services activities, including but not limited to the front desk, intake, pre-, intra-, and post- procedure care.
  • Reviews medical history, takes and documents vital signs, and communicates urgent or abnormal results to RN or clinician. Maintains accurate charting and documentation of all care rendered to the patient.
  • Reviews paperwork, obtains informed consents and completes thorough pre-procedure education
  • Assists clinicians and/or RNs in clinical areas.
  • Provides aftercare instructions and post procedure patient education.
  • Provides physical and emotional support to patients, effectively managing patient anxieties and fears.
  • Sets up and closes down clinical areas, including thoroughly cleaning and sanitizing rooms, ensuring that equipment is sterile, and coordinating waste management
  • Assists with timely and efficient execution of front desk activities, including but not limited to registering and checking-in/out patients, maintaining patient medical records, obtaining any additional consents needed for services and greeting visitors.
  • Ensures personal compliance of pertinent Hope Clinic policies and protocols, Illinois State regulations, OSHA guidelines and universal precautions. Ensures personal strict adherence to all federal HIPAA statutes and possesses understanding of medical confidentiality.

Qualifications

  • Commitment to abortion access and reproductive justice.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish highly preferred (will receive a pay differential)
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of individuals both internally and externally.
  • A multi-tasker with the ability to wear many hats in a fast-paced environment

  • Detail-oriented, organized, empathetic, and punctual.
  • Ability to maintain composure when patients and/or staff are stressed or upset.
  • Strong computer skills with experience utilizing electronic medical records.
  • A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic and problem-solving skills which support and enable sound decision making.

Working Conditions

  • This position operates in an outpatient office Working spaces will include exam rooms, procedure rooms and a recovery room.

Physical Requirements

  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear in person, on the telephone, and via web conference. Visual acuity adequate to perform job duties, including reading information from printed sources and computer screens, is necessary. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.
  • This position requires the ability to frequently lift and move patients.
  • This role requires both standing and sitting.
